Modernize my house exterior, need ideas!
Comments (5)A bare stretch of lawn does not say newer. I would look at planting some trees, not too close to the house, to frame the view. Some color near the house, say some rose bushes, easy ones like floribundas, in soft and compatible colors, like pink and white or cream, would make the house look more lively and attractive. Those two pots flanking the garage should have something taller in them to soften the stone facade. In fact, the pots should probably be larger and a contrasting color for a little pizzazz....See MoreExterior façade change
Comments (19)in order to achieve a modern look I should put windows that are not symmetrical? Wrought iron-barred windows in a multitude of new openings--symmetrical or not--will make your home look more like a prison than anything else. You want a modernist look? Consider the Mies Van Der Rohe-influenced facade below. Light, but no entry or exit. Metropolitan Correctional Center, Chicago. Arch. Harry Weese & Associates 1972. Photo: Matt Crawford But for consistency you'd have to change the roofing and the balustrade and the recessed facade. Best yet, have your architect or designer work with what you have....See MoreHow to modernize my home's exterior and give it more curb appeal?
Comments (4)Hi Jan, I actually do have a consult with an architectural firm today to discuss 'the plan'. I wouldn't dream of touching anything that requires professional precision like hardscaping. I was merely asking for some ideas so I don't go in blind; hence I said 'tweaks and large projects'. Also, I can do some tweaks on my own; I don't believe painting trim or hanging house numbers requires anyone else other than myself....See MoreUpdating recently purchased mid century modern home exterior?
Comments (25)That's a wonderful first home and looks well maintained - congratulations. From the examples you've been given, I would go with one of the darker greens, or darker brown. My own single story MCM is dark unsweetened chocolate brown - all of it, no brick other than built in planters in front - and in searching back through neighborhood photos, has been this color since built 1955. I have no plans to change it. I like the way it blends into the landscape as though a part of it, and not something just dropped into place from somewhere else ;0) I think blue would have that effect on your home with the treed background. One thing the PO had done here was paint the underside of the soffits warm white. I think if the darker color, it would appear a little dark when inside looking out...you might want to keep that in mind when painting along your parking and basketball hoop area and keep the part the overhangs the brick light colored on the underside. No one will notice from outdoors....See Morepartim
