Design Dilemma Home Decorating living room

wall art over piano

We need help with sizing of wall art over our piano. We are thinking of putting a big marble/abstract canvas. The piano will obviously be moved over and centered on this wall and the current decorations and wall art will be removed. The highest point of the ceiling is 12 feet, so we were wondering how big of a canvas to get?

Once you move the piano over, get something that starts about 6-8 inches above the piano with the top of the art about 6-8 inches below the lowest edge of the ceiling, straight up from the edge of the piano, on the right. Tape it out on the wall with painters tape to check the size.

Thanks everyone ... I appreciate all the help and compliments I received on this! The rug isn't new, but it was my 3rd try until I got it "right" You know I didn't even think to move the picture up a little, to cover the box, but I will definitely do that. Unfortunately my whole house needs to be rewired, so I will have many more of these type holes to patching paint!

Thanks everyone. I agree on the drapes, they came with the house - don’t love them. But the in addition to the two windows on each side of the fire place there there is a very large window on the walls to right and the left. So this will be quite an expense that I was trying to avoid. But definitely an option and would do in a similar way as @BeverlyFLADeziner suggests. I also agree with a chunkier mantel, however the mantel replacement will require additional stone work, so unless I can modify what I have, vs. replace it - that is not an option. I will definitely keep my eyes open for Art, you have sent some great suggestions that I like a lot. I don’t think I will go with a mirror, as I had one up for awhile and hated the reflection.. as some has commented could be an issue.

I agree with Ida. My advice with super tall ceilings is to ignore the super tall ceilings. :) Decorate as if they’re much lower. Ignore all art and frames here, these are just a few mock-ups for placement ideas only. Hopefully Celery sees this, as she does very good placement mock-ups. Of course you don’t have to do all square, all matching shapes, or as lined up as these are. It might help to cut out sizes and shapes with paper and hang with painter’s tape to get an idea of what look you like. There are lots of ideas out there if you search ’art over sofa’, ’hanging art over sofa’, and other relevant terms.

I'd put blinds Bamboo blinds, more contemporary, on the windows and open the drapery panels on each side of the windows... only need the drapes pulled when you want a total darkness. I'd put large art in the indented area with a table and lamp Ambient lighting is a must for any room. A tall piece of furniture on that tiled floor that meets the carpet. I'd pull the sectional closer to the tiled edge... away from the window move the ottoman to the far side... and the side chair. ... find a new play room for the kitchen set.

A portrait-format painting 2/3 - 3/4 as wide as the piano hung 5 - 8" above.

I think rule of thumb is to cover 2/3 of available space.....but as said above tape it out really helps......another option would be an area rug in some stunning colors and weave.....and they come in a variety of sized and will help damper sound in the room.

No wide than 75% of the piano's width, hung 5" above it. Can hang a bit higher if you have a piano lamp to deal with.
