deciding btw. stain or paint for trim in old home remodel
Comments (13)I would KILL for stained trim! Instead we're stripping off 80+ yrs worth of oil paint in multiple layers. What method are you using that makes it easy? I've found it to be a major PITA no matter what chemical I use and we resorted to the very unsafe dry scraping. Stain your trim. I'd have to see the room ot get a better idea, but I can picture your pine, as that's what we have. I'd go with a stain that's fairly natural and brings out the yellow, at least for the purple room. You might want to vary it a bit for the other rooms. Ideally I'd do it all one stain and keep it consistent, but we won't be doing that because 1)we chemical-stripped the trims in one room which stained them much darker than the original, so already they'll be darker than we'd like, and 2) those walls are pale yellow and the dark works, but our bedroom, for example, is sort of a deep red copper, and a lighter trim looks better. FWIW - we have "Colonial Maple" ,Olympic 41533 against a pale yellow wall and "Natural", also Olympic in the red/copper room....See MoreSuggestions for house trim color
Comments (2)Its great that you like SW already as they have a GREAT online visualizer. Take a pic of your house and upload it. You outline what you want to change and you can change out the colors all you want. Though I didn't buy SW paint, it helped a lot narrowing down the color because I could see how it looked with the existing brick and roof color. I wouldn't trust my computer monitor for the exact tint. Good luck....See MoreI finally painted my house, but just the trim. Wanna see?
Comments (18)Cyn, I'm not surprised you missed the hydrangea -- that corner of the pic is pretty dark. I have two azaleas under the windows that are bright pink when they bloom, but they bloom such a short time, and they never seem to get enough water because of the house overhang. I planted some bulbs there too, and some big pale pink day lilies that seem to be thriving. I've long struggled in my mind to figure out what's the best thing to do with that bed next to the house because of the not getting much sun or rain problem. Can I move those well established azaleas without killing them? I think they'd like more sun too. The P.O. said he watered them heavily all winter long but I'm too lazy for that in the cold weather and I feel guilty about it all the time. The house is in the Seattle area, btw. The little tree in the center of the front planter bed is my pride and joy and was a big splurge. It's a 'Tinkerbelle Dwarf Lilac' on standard and I love it when it blooms. I've toyed with the idea of expanding the flower bed that's closer to the street, too, but I fear that would make it harder to access the middle of it for weeding. I really don't know much about yard design, but I do love flowers and have planted a lot of perennials and bulbs there, plus it has three blueberry bushes that bear -- yumm! The bed is pretty crowded now because I love the cottage garden look. But that also gives a great haven for slugs, which we have a lot of here. Eeeew. Another guilty point is I shouldn't have let the lawn get so brown, but all the neighbors do that and it's expensive to water and the plus side of not watering enough is you don't have to mow so much. LOL Ideas on the yard would be welcome from any of you!...See MoreBlack window trim? Just painted my house white (from mustard yellow)
Comments (17)Wow, it really looks great! I know you just got rid of yellow on your house but have you considered a yellow door? It could be a homage to the old color and be a really great modern pop. Here's a mock-up of black window trim. I'm not a fan of the extreme contrast here. Not sure I like it as much as say, black windows. Your windows look like they are in good condition and don't need replacing, so that doesn't seem like a viable option....See Morecat_ky
