What kind of maple is this? I have seen them before as bonsais but I am not sure what maple it is. Also where is it native? Thanks!

Not damaging. Leafcutter bees are solitary native bees which need the leaf pieces to make small "cells" for their eggs which will hatch and live in the cell until next year when it emerges as an adult.

I'll have to take the little fence down around the tree and snap some closer pictures. I was in a rush to leave before work but in the previous thread someone mentioned that I should keep clipping the lilac stubs just so they don't grow. I did that and clip it flush to the ground. I believe I did that twice. I thought perhaps I should try digging it out but then realized I'd probably kill or disturb the maple... so I just left it. Worst case scenario it just acts as food for the maple right? It will eventually rot and go back into the earth as nutrients. I ALMOST clipped the maple not realizing before posting this last year that it was a different tree growing. I'm impressed that it did root right where the lilac was actually. The fact that it's done that makes it seems strong to me so it has to grow into a big tree...hahah It's border line possibly too close to the deck/patio both my house and neighbors house but in all reality before this ever gets to 60 ft I'll be in the ground. That maple by the shed is probably 12 years old. So that at least gives me some sense of growth rate. I remember when we first moved in 6 years ago it was not as tall but the width hasn't really spread out. I planted a weeping willow past the fence in the middle of the common area. I'll snap a pic as well. But I'm about 6'2" and when I planted that tree a year and a half ago it was shorter than me. At present date it's at least double my height. I'm so happy that it grows, my goal is to have some beautiful weeping willow tree to look at from the deck/back yard swing. I really love trees. It's a shame they take so long to grow. -Nigel

Awesome! I'm so excited that nature is finally helping us with the trees...lol I will take some better pictures tomorrow. I slightly trimmed the dead lilac stubs around the maple, but there is one sliver of the lilac on the far left that's hard to see in the picture, so I will get some close ups of that so that it can be seen a little easier. My concern with digging out the dead part would be uprooting the tiny maple which I'm fairly certain would probably happen. I COULD probably take the little sliver of lilac that is alive and figure out how to move that and then where to place it in the yard where it wouldn't die. We have tall fescue grass which surprisingly is green at the moment. I actually want to get as much shade as possible in the back because the one side of the house the grass is like carpet. Super thick and nice from being in the shade. Then come in August it will be nice and burnt :-( My main concern is if the maple does take off is the surface roots and it disturbing the patio, but in all reality that probably won't be for 15-20 years given it's current size now, and at that point I'll be 50 and probably have more issues than tree roots to worry about...hahah It's been windy the last couple days so this little whip of a maple is blowing around. Would cutting a bucket's bottom out and placing it over the maple help with wind and or possible animals? More pictures in the morning. Thanks, -Nigel
