living room design, reupholstering furniture and arrangement

We recently renovated our house. I have some good furniture pieces from before the remodel (beautiful silk carpet that pulled things together). I wanted to make the room less formal and bought the carpet shown and am wanting to upholster the chairs and ottoman.
We changed the stone around the fire place to a black granite and kept the oak surround. The room is weirdly asymmetrical. Measures 23 x 15 feet. The pictures have been taken from the entryway foyer. I hope to keep sheer curtains. I was thinking of black velvet ottoman and for the chairs, fabric which is soft black with smudgy cream highlights. Hope to tie in the couch with some accent pillows which have some black (something textured
/ handloom).
The wall adjacent to the fireplace will have a large canvas with bold colors.
I hope to create a neutral seating area with bright art around it.
The paint on the walls is Sherwin Williams Passive

I think I made a mistake with the rug - worst case scenario can move it to the basement :( and buy new.

How to arrange living room furniture
Comments (34)Here're some grabbed quick off a fine designers' website that aren't templates for this room but do illustrate the idea of loosening up furniture placement for living and inviting people in. There's no rule about facing a sofa to a fireplace or not, placing something diagonally or not, just as there's no rule that furniture must be placed at rigid right angles and not allowed to be angled or moved over for better conversation. These designers charge a lot to mess furniture placement up like this. David Easton's, second below, could look as if it were going to be formal right-angle but some of the chairs aren't placed yet--but it doesn't. This designer knows how to arrange furniture for comfort AND elegance, without static rigidity. Note that none of these arrangements present their backs or a cold shoulder to guests in the doorway. They draw people in. Not all pictures clearly illustrate that, but the designers' stature guarantee it is the case. Lynn G, you’re right. Having to look at the wall would be a bit depressing. Comments (2)IMO too soon to be buying furniture . When renovating all kinds of issues come up that need a rethink of plans sometimes so I would wait until at least the drywall is up then come back with a to scale floor plan and you will get lots of free help here. BTW why are you not asking your designer these questions . Please never put a TV above a fireplace if at all possible and before designing built ins please think about what you own that needs to be displayed. In my experience most builtins are just filled with stuff that requires no display and if there is space enough on either side of the FP 2 matching low cabinets one on each side with the TV wall mounted above one and a piece of art above the other saves the cluttered look of bookshelves and the TV on an articulating arm allows a lot of freedom with furniture arrangement. 4 years agoHere are some older photos. I can’t seem to find any before photos showing the entire room.
As you can see the room was very formal - oriental rug, silk curtains and all.
Kind of scared that with the oriental rug with pattern will head in that direction again.
I had seen a rug at a store earlier ( picture attached). Thought it would be a not so traditional rug but it was sold.
Painting the trim is a good idea. I might even paint the fireplace but want to wait till furniture falls into place.
