need backsplash in powder room?
Comments (5)We do not have a backsplash in our guest bathroom and the powder room off the kitchen (both have pedestal sinks). There are also no tiles behind the sinks, just bathroom paint. So far, everything is holding up well (5 years)even thought we also have kids using both of the bathrooms :-)...See MoreBacksplash idea - white subways with TIN ceiling tiles?
Comments (5)Very do-able, and if I were doing subways [I'm not], I'd definetly go with a herringbone. I 'get' the running bond look, but I've seen it so much lately it doesn't have much impact anymore. But combining with the tin could be a little tough: tin tiles [I assume we are talking about the embossed ceiling tiles] are generally too large and the wrong size to integrate easily. So I'd do the herringbone with no accent all around the room, then switch to a more 'picture frame' look with subways, chair rail and mitered corners over the range. I'd choose the tin tile [or tiles or medallion] now, and have it glued to a flame proof MDF for mounting. Then I'd screw [using the pattern of the tile to camoflauge the screw heads] the assembly to the wall and have the tile laid to fit around it exactly. This will give you the option of unscrewing the tin tiles at some point down the road and replaceing it with a mosaic or other accent piece without disturbing the subway frame. Since the tin could be painted, you could change it to match your accent color as often as you please. If you wanted to get *really whacky*, you could even buy enough tin now for several different centers, paint/finish them differently, and change them out with the seasons. But choose the tin carefully: it needs to be interesting, but not so textured as to catch grease, and rigid enough to take a good scrubbing without squishing....See MoreWhen tiles are more or less out: Backsplash ideas
Comments (19)I liked the pressed tin backsplash. Looked practical too. I agree that some of those backsplashes were far from practical; the river stone being #1 on that list. In the room where you're guaranteed to make messes, why would anyone opt for something so high maintenance? Of course, I have a relative who has REAL river rock /slate in his entryway and kitchen; he dragged them out of the riverbed himself and installed them. They're dark and gorgeous, but they're not completely flat. I always wonder how hard it must be to sweep those floors. I also agree that tile's the way to go -- whether it's considered in style or not. It can be had for a reasonable price, comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, and is infinitely washable....See Moreopinions needed: no backsplash for powder room?
Comments (11)I have a wall-mounted sink in a powder room which gets a lot of use from 2 kids. No backsplash. Funny, it was fine after I painted and caulked it years ago, but since we had "professionals" redo it 18 months ago, I'm thinking about installing a backsplash. The muddy splashes clean off well enough but the wall-sink interface is not doing well at all. I do think a quality paint job should be fine--wipe it down and you're good. Caulking the crack properly is crucial though. Be aware that small kids will be tempted to stand on that shelf to reach the sink, or just because....See MoreEileen
