Pics of 99% finished Kitchen Reno
Comments (14)Hi mscajnunpie, When these canisters arrived, the glass part of the two pictured on the left were broken to bits. They were originally the "cut glass" pattern of the right one. I know you can't see this in the pic. I loved them so much and contacted seller to find a replacement. She bought them off ebay originally and didn't know manufacturer. I finally found glass vases at a craft store and glued them into the base of the two broken ones as I was determined to make it work somehow. Sorry I can't give you a manufacturer/vendor name. The tops and bases are a resin material and there's no company markings on them. If I knew where they originally came from, I'd be happy to share and I would have ordered more myself. I'd just keep searching ebay, maybe another set will pop up. Sorry to not be more help....See MoreAlmost finished minor reno - we kept our 80s oak cabinets!
Comments (31)biochem101 and brody_miasmom and mamalynn, we painted all the trim in the house bright white right after we moved in. A few weeks before moving day, I showed the online pics to a friend who works for an interior design firm. She saw all the stained trim and started singing, "Ring a-round the wind-ow, ring a-round the roo-oom." I didn't think it looked that bad, but I love painted trim and it wasn't like I was painting over vintage old-growth, twelve-inch hardwood baseboards, so DH painted all the trim glossy white and all the hollow core interior doors flat black. Thanks for your remarks on the backsplash,lisa_a. It does read a soft blue-grey that somehow goes with the green walls. It's a mosaic of 5/8" glass-and-steel tiles grouted with grey grout. As you can see, it was hard for an amateur like me to install it straight when each tile had a different thickness. Yikes, this section is really crooked! It was marketed as an accent listello in mesh-mounted strips 3 tiles wide by 18 tiles long, so installation took awhile....See MoreVery modest kitchen reno...almost finished
Comments (77)Thanks so much Sandra! I'm sorry I haven't replied until now. My work schedule this past week and just life in general was hectic... I really like the last one of the 3 black stools. They work well with the table in the morning room. I wonder if they would stay clean though, with kids (and adults--b/c we make messes too!). I looked a little bit today in real life, but couldn't find anything that stood out. Thank you to the others as well, for your kind compliments! I did find drawer pulls today for the island and to replace on the other cabinets! And they were 1/2 off b/c The Great Indoors is closing near us! I haven't made a decision on pendants yet either. I still need to look at backsplash too...but now I'm realizing that the tumbled marble I was envisioning probably won't work with the granite...it will be too hard to match. We'll see......See MoreFinished Kitchen: Circa 1840 Working Farmhouse, IKEA Budget Reno
Comments (107)this is a gorgeous kitchen! More on India ink as stain: I've used it on furniture a lot. Be SURE you get permanent India ink. It has some shellac in it to make it more waterproof. It has amazing coverage. I have done an entire armchair frame with only an ounce or two. It's also very messy if you drip it, so wear old clothes and get some disposable latex gloves. It may raise the grain on some woods. Sand the wood smooth before applying it, then do a very light sanding after it's completely dry, if it feels at all rough. Apply a second coat if the sanding removes any of the color. The color is a warm black. It's opaque but the grain of the wood will show through, unlike with paint. It's a pretty unique finish. I have never used Waterlox over my ink finishes, since they were furniture. I think you do need something though--the finish doesn't seem to be super permanent even though the ink is labeled permanent. (That's more for when it's used on paper, not furniture or counters that get a lot of wear and tear.) I used beeswax on the furniture which seemed to seal the ink pretty well. I don't think I would use it on wooden chair seats, though. Too much risk of rubbing off on clothing down the road....See Moremelle_sacto is hot and dry in CA Zone 9/
