Studio Murphy Bed: stain/colors advice

Diesel J

I've been renting out the studio apartment that I used to live in before I was married and had kids. It recently suffered water damage so the floors need to be replaced and the Murphy bed/shelving was temporarily removed.

I've loved the way it looked for 16 years but now am thinking I should use this opportunity to update it. I want it to be modern and attractive to appeal to future renters, as well as for me or my family members to enjoy in later years.

I'm a little nervous to change the look, and wonder what others on this forum would recommend. Here's my ideas:

  • Darken the natural red oak Murphy bed/shelves with an espresso stain (or is it too dark for such a small space?)
  • Change handles to satin brass
  • Replace the parquet oak flooring with planks, Kahrs engineered wood; not too dark and not too light (several samples attached as I'm trying to pick one)
  • Paint walls Benjamin Moore white dove

The studio is 457 SF, and of that the main living area is about 300 SF.
