My brand new standard has crown gall
Comments (5)Oh, dear - how sad. If you noticed several clumps of what looked like "oversized walnuts", the disease was fairly far along. The nursery should refund your money without any question, but I am concerned about their practices - they should have noticed. Hopefully they will check their other standard roses from the same source before selling them. I would not purchase a replacement from the same place. It is my understanding that crown gall exists in the soil everywhere, and it is just an injury to the rose which lets it get in to the rose. If you are worried about your other roses, but all you did was deadhead, I would just get some rose clippers (not scissors), and disinfect them with bleach, and do some light pruning on the branches where you deadheaded. Probably not necessary at all, but it might make you feel better. Re the dirt, since you just planted it yesterday, it did not get that from your dirt. Since you already removed lots of dirt, I would just wait a week or so, and water that area well in the meantime. Jackie...See MoreIs this crown gall on my new cherry?
Comments (6)I'm no expert but certainly looks like it! Regardless, tree roots are not supposed to look like that! I would send it back ASAP. Coming from Stark Bros, I'm surprised they let that go. But then again, they just shipped me a Pecan tree that already has pecan scab and just told me to spray it....See MoreDid Edmunds' send me a rose with crown gall on the roots?
Comments (31)I wish I could be of help ac91z6, but I'm rather clueless when it comes to this topic. The first rose Edmunds sent me a rep told me their horticulturist believed it to be crown gall and to destroy the plant. They shipped new plants, and the new rose had similar roots to the first, I sent them pictures of the new one, and this time their horticulturist called me and told me this was normal for Francis Meilland's roots, and to not worry about planting the rose. I am not a horticulturist, so I took his word at face value and planted the rose. I'm not entirely naive, and created a paper trail with them should I have a problem down the road given the conflicting information they gave me. Out of the 80+ roses I've planted in the past three years, FM is the only one with roots that looked like that. My advice would be to reach out to Regan, offer to send them pictures and see what they say....See MoreIs this crown gall?
Comments (6)@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw they arent from the same place. The original culprit came from RVR but its neigbor was from Heirloom.. Since this is a rooftop balcony my thinking is that the persistent and sometimes strong winds could've easily swept some infected soil, or as @susan9santabarbara said some errant water splashed. Its weird because this rose (Tahitian Sunset) did so well until one day it simply stopped doing anything—not a single sign of growth in months. But given how hard and woody the growth felt, and its shape is almost square (like a small container Heirloom may use for rooting) I dismissed the poor performance as just a slow own root grower and the growth as some sort of callous. But the pictures look way more gall like sadly....See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
