Root Damage and Crown Gall
Comments (8)We've been dealing with crown gall in the Sacramento cemetery. We seem to especially get it where roses have been infested with grass, and men have trimmed carelessly with weedeaters. But that's not the only place. I do believe that damaging roots can increase the risk of entry, and sometimes you only discover the gall when you dig up the plant and find out how infested the roots have become. It isn't always evident on the crown. However, we have dug up roses and moved them, with no visible problem. We try to leave the planting spaces where we've removed gall-infected roses fallow for several years, although I've heard that doesn't really assure that the bacterium is gone. I've also been told that it is systemic throughout the plant, so propagating a gall-infested rose is not wise. We try to practice good hygiene with our pruners, and to avoid getting dirt in contact with a pruning cut. Since our roses are planted fairly far apart, we have watched roses with crown gall and not removed them until they begin to decline. They sometimes seem vigorous for years but then suddenly die back. I've learned to look at roots of a sickly rose when we are removing it, because I often find gall or rot of some kind. In California, Cooperative Extension doesn't test soil, but we do test galls or other diseased parts of plants. I've had the crown gall confirmed on several of our cemetery roses, and think now that I can recognize it when I see it. Some of the apparent galls on the canes have turned out just to be proliferating growth that can develop when a cane is sunburned or damaged otherwise. No tobacco was ever grown in the cemetery, I guarantee it! Anita...See MoreWatch out.....Weeks Rose crown galled!
Comments (13)Dan, Thanks for the advice....which advice will serve me well if in the future I ever get another rose showing crown gall. I will calm down and do what you say. As for the galled Milwaukee's Calatrava in question...I freaked out when I saw it, reacted angrily and impulsively, and went ballistic, cutting it into little pieces and placing it in the household trash. It's history! My impulsive reaction was in part due to my dread of some day having my rose bed decimated by a disease like Rose Rosette Disease, which up until now I have been spared. RRV is epidemic in W. PA. So I am extra cautious about adding any diseased rose to my garden. I fawn over my roses, probably obsessively. Moses...See MoreCrown Gall on new band?
Comments (13)KS, Oh no, that might make it confusing for RVR to figure out if its MN or Reve d'Or that is susceptible to the gall. I will do as you say and get rid of pot, dirt, and plant and take a few more pics just in case. I ordered the MN band from RVR initially, because RPN was initially out of MN, once they got it back in stock I ordered another one from them and that came with flowers on it and RPN is the same place I got my original MN thats healthy, so I trust them. I am encouraged that you got reimbursed. Last time RVR sent me the wrong plant, they finally said they would send out the correct one and never did. I just gave up after that. Its been awhile since I ordered from them but I did get Little Grey Pearl from them last year and it was correct so took a chance on MN. If it had turned out to be a disease free, Reve d'Or, I would not have been mad about that! Its a beautiful rose and on my list..just not gonna get it from there now lol. Its a shame because they have so many good roses in their catalog. roseseek, thanks for the explanation. I love that you and others on this foum are so willing to teach. I feel like I'm always learning. I will not be keeping this since anything that comes of it would be more susceptible to gall. Right now, Ive been lucky, not having it. Jeri, that's very sad about Heirloom Old Garden Roses having gall in all the roses you purchased. That is very scary! I am not going to get a replacement from RVR, its too stressful wondering if the gall would show up....See MoreJust arrived DA’s. Is this something serious?
Comments (15)Thank you Cyndita, so far my experience with David Austin has been excellent. I have a lot of faith in their service and I am certain they will make it right. It is still very disappointing Do they do not have quality control? Those roses should have never been allowed to leave their premises. Lynn I hope Regan will take care of your rose issues. I have never done business from them but I have heard good things so it should be taken care of. I am sorry you have to deal with this also. I passed up some beautiful David Austin roses this year I found at my Lowe’s because I could see the thrips. I have thrips in my garden and they are terrible and the thought of even introducing another species of the same devils made me not bring those roses home. I sure would hate to introduce one more pest to my garden. It is not like we gardens don’t have enough pests to battle every year already....See MoreNick 10bSW17
