I've had luck with foxglove before..but lupines usually can't make it. It helps that last summer was cooler and more moist than usual..and spring has been cool this year, I'm sure.

perennialfan, the lupine should be a bluish/lavender, and the foxglove was seed from a pink.

I planted some starter-size lupines last summer, they came back this year but are pretty small - not sure if it's early for them and they'll beef up or whether they'll stay puny this year. Truthfully, I bought them more for the foliage than the flowers, though the flowers are eye-catching. So, not expecting much from them, but we'll see.

Thanks! That lupine clump is coming back this year, but its getting a little crowded by its neighbors, I dont expect it will get to that size again. Still remember the excitement seeing the flower buds last year.

I’m right there with you, Dillybeansdown! For me, it’s an iris. Over the past 18 months or so I’ve gotten lots of irises from other people’s gardens and (not surprisingly) fewer than half of them bloomed last year. This spring they are all looking big and healthy, and I just saw my first iris buds on one of them this afternoon! Woohoo!! I can’t wait for iris season!!

I have had a pathetic iris bloom last two years, even the old pallida clones only sent out one stalk this year. It's our weather (with three abrupt early spring dips from above freezing to 5F) the last couple that have frozen bloom spikes for us.
