I don't have any experience with arbors or climbers, but just a note that you'll need varities that can stand up to the hot, dry summer sun. Good news is that you don't have to worry about blackspot or cane hardiness!

They might not be the best for fragrance, but you might want to look at climbing teas in zone 9. Their nodding habit means you'll be able to look at the flowers from below better than some modern climbers. The Cochets are all really pretty (not very fragrant, alas). Lady Hillingdon is fragrant, and has pretty foliage with nice, burgundy new growth that looks great with her soft yellow-apricot blooms. Roses Unlimited has the climbing version. In zone 9 you *might* be able to grow Marechal Niel in a sunny, sheltered spot. If you can, that rose is really special. I have one in a pot and with a bit of protection in zone 8b it has survived in that condition through two winters, though many people say it is a weak rose on its own roots. Burling is possibly going to graft some, so you may want to email her about that. Marechal Niel is fragrant (not overpoweringly so, but really nice to stick your nose into), blooms a lot, has a clear yellow color that sometimes is almost like butter and other times is more like a ripe lemon. Makes a great cut flower, and has pretty green foliage.

Below: some of the palest blooms I've seen on my Marechal Niel -- I may have under-fertilized it at the point this was taken. Growing a big climber in a large container is probably fool hardy, but I read somewhere that own-root plants might be better off in containers than in the ground, due to a weak root system.

Spirit of Freedom is a beautiful and fragrant climber. I would definitely pick her. I have FBPT but she is still small. I have both pink and white Maman Cochet climbers. They take a few yrs to get going so you could start them in pots and find a place for them later :D. They will get HUGE!

MN is a beauty and mannerly climber. The color is much softer than Teasing Georgia. Does well here with our humidity. It might do well in some parts of Calif. maybe closer to the coast than inland.

Mel's Heritage is beautiful and fragrant. I've been eyeing that one for awhile and finally caved and bought it. I'm sure it would do great for you.

As mentioned above oh, flamingo dancer and Renee. There is one Ingrid grows as a climber but the Name Escapes me at the moment. It might not be big enough however to cover Ann Arbor. I think it's actually a polyantha. You could probably grow climbing Cecil Brunner if you want a monster! There are so many Lily and without black spot it would be so difficult to choose. Perhaps look up some of Koreans old posts she had so many

I think vaporvac is thinking of Aunt Margy's Rose, a polyantha that against my house wall at one time went up to 7 feet although at present it's more like 6. One of my favorites is Reve d'Or, but I think the color would be too similar to Colette.

Ben , no one grows Eden as good as you!! I planned on having one but was t sure it would bloom enough for me on An arbor . Also I’ve seen how large this gets in California from Instagram.. I’m not sure it wouldn’t swallow the arbor out and have it for breakfast!! Lol

carla , I can grow hybrid teas no problem. I meant the old antique tea roses .. some people close to the city of Nashville can grow them just fine but I was on an incredibly cold windy rolling hill and mine never made it past 2 -4 ft tall. Winters constantly knock them back. :)

I hope to see these tea roses in person at a public garden someday! I’m going to look these up as I know nothing about them . Maybe I don’t have to have Colette .. lol

My husband who never did a thing to our one acre is already trying to claim the nice front yard for lawn as he loves the new sod . Eye roll!! God love him. I told him he’ll be traveling so much he won’t have time to fight me on this. If I leave him grass it won’t be much . Lol

Tell him you love the new sod too, because it will make great topsoil for your roses! I know from personal experience, I carved out half my front yard for rose beds.

This would be for the CA folks, but how do the noisettes do out there? There are so many gorgeous noisettes & tea-noisettes you could try! :-)

I had just remembered and you posted it! : )) Lilyfinch, I'm sure once you see the lay of the land, you'll be able to sneak in a few more climbers on a fence or up your walls. It's so much sunnier there so some of the HMs seem to do better. I have faith in you! : ))

Mel’s Heritage would be great, but you’d need to do a lot of pruning to keep him from taking over. If you like pruning, he can be kept in check and still bloom well. Just remember, everything will get bigger than you expect. You can take a look at my climbers, and how old they are. That should give you some idea of how large some will grow. I have ALMD, Bubble Bath, Felicia, Poseidon (it wants to be a climber here), Mel’s Heritage, Cornelia, Crepuscule, Lady Ashe, and maybe some more that I’m forgetting. Don’t forget, some roses that you wouldn’t think of as climbers can be grown as climbers here. I prune some of my DA’s in January and again in late summer to keep them under control. Lisa

Thank you !!! I am due late October. So I know planting in the fall is better but I’m trying to keep myself busy while stuck in a hotel limbo ! :) I know I easily fall for roses at nurseries and really wanted to have a plan .
