Window treatments and transoms
Comments (14)I have transoms. One thing I had not thought about until I started looking for window treatments was the height of the "stack" of blinds and roman shades when the treatments are fully open. The "stack" (i.e., the slats when stacked up when the treatment is fully open or up) on wood blinds is very thick and the stack would have covered up my transoms completely on my taller windows (I wanted inside mount) and I wanted to be able to see the transoms. All the blind/roman shade manufacturers that I looked at provided information about the "stack" height, so it's easy to get that information. An interior designer that I know says that wood blinds are really intended to be kept down down most of the time and then you adjust the slats to let in light/view. But we live out in the country and have nice views and I didn't want to be looking through slats when I looked at my view. Good luck....See MoreWindow Treatments and Transoms
Comments (4)It really depends on what you want to do. Usually people don't want to cover up the transoms after they've spent alot of money for them! I generally see blinds in the lower windows leaving the transoms open because of the trim that separates the 2. When I do drapery treatments for windows with transoms, I personally like to treat the entire window going above the transom; otherwise the window tends to look squatty and cut off. But, sometimes people want to treat the lower window only. Why don't you live in your home for a bit and see what kind of glare/sunlight you'll get and then decide what to do....See MoreHow to treat transom window over bed
Comments (20)Wow, thank you for all the responses! cyn--The house we are looking at is in a 55+ community. Not sure if we can plant trees, but it's certainly a question I can ask. mtn--I love my 4-poster bed, so I'm not ready to chop the posts off. It's a shaker pencil point, so maybe it won't look too badly. geokid--I love barn doors and that would be an awesome look! Your solution is great. Thanks for the pics! mayflowers--I did find one photo on Houzz with shutters on what appeared to be a similar size window. I guess if I'm willing to dish out the cash, I can always have it made. nosoccermom--Thanks for the picture. Beautiful room! LuAnn--Yes, I know the sun comes up in the east, but in my part of the country the entire sky gets light too. ;) sasafras--I'm leaning toward leaving it uncovered, at least to start. momcat--I had mentioned stained glass to DH. Since I don't think I would have room to put any art (or at least what I current have) over the bed, that could solve two issues. chispa--I have duettes in my current home and love them. Motorized would certainly be the way to go. You certainly are light sensitive! xc60--Having the window in that location pretty much dictates where I would put the bed, though I've considered locating it in front of the double window due to other furniture placement. I think having a window hanging in the air might look strange, however. What do you think? patricia--another vote for leaving it open. Thanks! marti--was it difficult to reach the levers to close? I'm vertically challenged at 5'2". Guess that would be DHs job! yayagal--I'm glad to say we are not so bothered by light as you and others, now if we could get the birds to stop chirping in the summer at 4 a.m....See MorePhoto's of window treatments over bathtub
Comments (13)I have a problem of having the window over the tub and in the very front of the house. Since we have to have privacy, and I love to let in light, each day I have to climb up on our tub decking to close the three blinds. It has been a pain! I've though about putting up one long roman shade, so that I only have one string to fool with and can leave the blinds opened. Another option would be remote curtains, but they are expensive. One problem is that there is another window in the room that would need addressing to match the front window. You cannot see in this photo, but the vanity lighting is just above this window and the window also sits really close to the sink mirror, so hanging an addition curtain or shade in this area may be difficult....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
