anything to consider before replacing roof..move ac ducts, etc?
Comments (7)Thank you guys! They are only in a part of one back bedroom, and pretty minimal. The rest of the low ceilings are in areas that are inconsequential - side entryhallway, hallway between two walk-in closets at master bedroom, between a guest bath and the door. Now that I think about it, Beadle put sky lights in all these areas, maybe to minimize the lower ceilings there? I am so scared that as I slowly progress through this remodel, I will make a mistake. My stepmo. suggested raising the roof, but I am pretty certain that would hurt the architectural integrity of the house. I do not mind the ceiling height and with all the glass and light, it is not noticeable. I just dont want to think about something later that I should have done before the roof was replaced. Is there anything I might be missing??? It is an asphalt roof currently. Below are pics of what the previous owners did. The layers of fascia board will be removed. I am replacing all the wood on the ext. walls ("Beadle board" - pics 2,3) with new sealed and sanded redwood (will retain Beadle board style) and re-stuccoing with smooth finish. Of course, the red rock will stay. The old roof-line was at the bottom of the fascia board (see black/white pic of house in 1958). Thank you so much for your replies. I do feel better about the ductwork....See MoreBefore & After! New Media Console a'la Chalk Paint...
Comments (5)Since Chalk Paint is at the top of the threads today, just wanted to thank you for the nice comments and add more details. I wish I had the time to take some better photos. Fireplace: In California's Central Valley, we don't have much cold weather. Our fireplace is gas and when we did use it, the gas bill went sky high even for the half dozen days we had a fire. If we sold the house, the fireplace is still there so not gonna worry about 'repurposing' this area for t.v. viewing. Chalk Paint Color: I bought a qt. of Paris Gray and painted the piece. Husband thought it was a little blah. I put some Louis Blue from a little sample jar I had on the middle door and he thought it was too bright. So I mixed Paris Gray and Duck Egg Blue about 50/50, then poured in a little of the Louis Blue all in a foam coffee cup. I painted that on and it seemed the right mix of blue and gray so it stands out but not too much. Distressing: I then coated the whole piece with Minwax clear furniture wax. Then, I took a little sanding sponge and hit the edges as well as a little on that middle door to distress it a bit. Then, I took a tee shirt and rubbed on some Annie Sloan dark wax on the distressed places, just a little at a time. I immediately followed by rubbing off the dark wax with the Minwax on another tee shirt as per instructions. When it looked distressed enough I just let it dry. The wood top: The top was a little scratched up on this old dresser but I used some RAF (Restore A Finish) on the top and cleaned it up good. No chalk paint on top. Left the original, just cleaned up a bit. When I get my living room restored from moving out my old t.v. and black armoire, and pictures re-hung, will post a finished photo. Why the Fireplace? My sofa has been angled for many years to provide a nice seating area and t.v. viewing. The last few months I've developed neck pain from turning my head a little to watch t.v. We needed some way to move the t.v. The ONLY viable option was the fireplace wall. This photo shows the former black armoire for the tv and sofa placement. It's an old picture, so furniture is a bit different now. Red...See MoreMoving into new home. Need help choosing paint colors.
Comments (19)I think I would also be like you and need to paint while the house is empty. I think the suggestions above are good ones. Also look at Revere Pewter, a Ben. Moore color that is very popular. It's a warm grey and you can do a search and find it here. Also, a neighbor of mine just painted her living room and hall a color called Dune Drift in the Seaside Collection by Valspar paint, sold at Lowes. It's a very calming color that is a neutral greyed green. A great Ben. Moore color that a few friends used and I love (and wish I used it in hindsight) is called Bamboo Shoot #1529. The other colors on the same strip as this that are deeper in color are also beautiful (Ocean Pebbles). My daughter just painted her bedroom BM Coventry Grey,a beautiful grey (cooler grey with a trace of blue). She says she feels like she is living in Nantucket. Beautiful with white molding. I have seen photos of most of these colors on this site. I don't like how the colors show on My Perfect Color, so don't check them out there. Sorry, I don't know any specific colors by Behr, but they will match anything because the color formulas are in their computer....See MoreNeed Help with Paint Color before I move!!!
Comments (9)Don’t paint yet. Right now I really like the wall color (as shown on my monitor) and I think your gray couch will work well with it. Throw pillows on the gray sofa will tie it all in…an inexpensive option while you decide what to do. One of my favorites…Kravet latika…lots of gray, but enough of your wall color in the mix. I love the two colors together…....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
