Before & After! New Media Console a'la Chalk Paint...

So I posted that I was going to chalk paint (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) a Craigslist dresser to use as media console for new flat screen t.v. Well, my pix didn't come out that well, but you get the idea.

We pulled out the two top drawers and DH faced them out with some 1x2 pine which I painted, and he cut plywood for the bottom of missing drawers. I painted and waxed the dresser and also used rustoleum oil rubbed bronze spray paint on old ugly hardware. We pulled off the old fireplace mantel to place the tv against the fireplace brick. I like the way it came out! Hope you do too.

Looks great! I can't tell the color - is it duck egg? I'm confused though - are you not going to use your fireplace anymore?

Oakley - I'm so sorry about you losing your dad, brother and I guess basically your mom as well. I've lost my dad and one of my brothers and it's hard. I've been thinking a lot about friends and family lately and will probably be doing so over the next few months. I will be 60 in January and for some reason it is making me think about a lot of things - the future and what will it bring and the past and have I been happy with it. I'm happy with my choice in DH and I love my kids but sometimes wonder about roads untraveled and choices made. Would I do anything differently? I don't know. I know that the last 10 years, since turning 50, have just flown by and so I know how fast the next 10 years will go. I know that I have many changes ahead of me - retirement, my mom will probably pass away, my kids will develop careers and hopefully bring me DIL's (I have 2 sons) and maybe grandbabies. But the thing that I am not looking forward to is losing friends. That will be especially hard. Well, I just reread this and aren't I melancholy today. Shall I delete it - no I think I'll post it anyway.

hi Tina, yes, I'm familiar with regular milk paint; I used it for a number of projects a few years back. Love the stuff! Love that matte chalky tactile finish, too. If one can apply this Sloan chalk paint on top of other finishes, sounds like it's different from milk paint in that it has some kind of latex or acrylic additives. I know they market an acrylic binder that can be added to regular ole milk paint to achieve the same kind of coverage. But that must make it a bit more like a regular paint, and I have to say I'm rather fond of the unique way milk paint can be thinned as desired for that slightly see-through washed wood effect. Great tip on the ammonia as remover, cyn47, thanks! We tried just about everything to get 100-year-old milk paint off our kitchen woodwork in former house; can't recall if we tried ammonia. We finally resorted to a commercial preparation that I thought was more pricey than it was worth. At least we have established a definitive connection between felines and chalk/milk paint. As my contribution towards minimizing general grumpiness, here's a shot of my kitty on one of my old milk-paint projects. Well, at least his ears:

Thanks, molly! :) When it first came to my attention, I chalked (ha, ha) it up to just another fad in blogland .... destined to become as hated and looked down on as sponge painted walls. :-D But it's really just the name that is new (20 yrs or so), while the look/technique/mixture are ancient. Not our mixes, since we use latex, but the lime, silica, chalk, etc used then. I also started researching painted antiques (painted back then, not current), and saw many similarities. It's always been around, and many stunning pieces still exist. I'm picky about my goals: to paint pieces that I hope will stand the test of time, and NOT look like a cliche someday .... to take something very unwanted, destined for trash pick-up, and bring out it's beauty for many more years ... and, I will not paint just for the sake of change. I absolutely love wood finishes, but there's certainly room for painted pieces, too. :)

My3dogs, LOL!! You gave me a great laugh, and I'm on the couch sick today, so thank you! :-D He's working today, can't wait to tell him ... would you believe, he always wonders why I tell him he's such a hunk? He's so modest! :) Here, too: CL is full of chalk painter ads now. I agree about the one you posted, well said about it just looking painted, rather than transformed. I have a lot to learn, but my goal is for each piece to not just look painted. I want it to look like it was made that way first, a one-of-a-kind classic look, that hopefully won't look dated or faddish in the future. I don't always succeed, and have had my share of mistakes (I should post a little animal print table I did, everyone laughs at it, meanies), but I learn something new with each piece. :) This post was edited by Miz_M on Sat, Jul 27, 13 at 12:27

Since Chalk Paint is at the top of the threads today, just wanted to thank you for the nice comments and add more details. I wish I had the time to take some better photos.

Fireplace: In California's Central Valley, we don't have much cold weather. Our fireplace is gas and when we did use it, the gas bill went sky high even for the half dozen days we had a fire. If we sold the house, the fireplace is still there so not gonna worry about 'repurposing' this area for t.v. viewing.

Chalk Paint Color: I bought a qt. of Paris Gray and painted the piece. Husband thought it was a little blah. I put some Louis Blue from a little sample jar I had on the middle door and he thought it was too bright. So I mixed Paris Gray and Duck Egg Blue about 50/50, then poured in a little of the Louis Blue all in a foam coffee cup. I painted that on and it seemed the right mix of blue and gray so it stands out but not too much.

Distressing: I then coated the whole piece with Minwax clear furniture wax. Then, I took a little sanding sponge and hit the edges as well as a little on that middle door to distress it a bit. Then, I took a tee shirt and rubbed on some Annie Sloan dark wax on the distressed places, just a little at a time. I immediately followed by rubbing off the dark wax with the Minwax on another tee shirt as per instructions. When it looked distressed enough I just let it dry.

The wood top: The top was a little scratched up on this old dresser but I used some RAF (Restore A Finish) on the top and cleaned it up good. No chalk paint on top. Left the original, just cleaned up a bit.

When I get my living room restored from moving out my old t.v. and black armoire, and pictures re-hung, will post a finished photo.

Why the Fireplace? My sofa has been angled for many years to provide a nice seating area and t.v. viewing. The last few months I've developed neck pain from turning my head a little to watch t.v. We needed some way to move the t.v. The ONLY viable option was the fireplace wall.

This photo shows the former black armoire for the tv and sofa placement. It's an old picture, so furniture is a bit different now.

Love it - great new look for your space. Nice to see you pop in even though I am not at all happy with your assessment of neck pain from angled TV viewing. We had a similar arrangement but Keith complained of neck pain and I *reluctantly* obliged him and angled the sofa - have always hated it that way - thought he was just being high maintenance. So now I have to accommodate his sensitive neck *willingly* and not be such a b*tch huh?
