Exterior Design Dilemma - Boring House

Colin M

We recently bought a house built in 1884. We’re renovating the interior, but we feel at a loss with what to do for the exterior. This house has lost is character/curb appeal, if it ever had any. The town is largely Colonial, Georgian and Cape Cod styles and we’d like to stick close to the town themes.

Current Ideas/Options:

1. Serious landscaping makeover – Removing most of what’s currently there and creating large slightly raised gardening beds along the front foundation.

2. New front stoop – Larger, ornate and (almost) flush with the front door (Georgian style). New curved stone steps and stone walkway leading from the road. Probably large lantern style lighting on either side of the front door.

3. Larger, ornate window trim, more shutters and window boxes. We’ll also likely address the imbalance of 2 windows vs 1 on either side of the front door by making it 2 and 2.

4. And new metal roofing.

I’m just not sure this is enough.

The biggest problems we see:

1. The large “dead” space above the front windows and door... as though the house has a massive forehead. Inside, this area is the second floor, but much too low to add windows.

2. The add-ons. We need the inside space (might be able to lose the smallest one), but they make the house look disjointed.

3. Not sure what to do with the side entrance/stairs.

Any (constructive) advice/thoughts appreciated.

P.S. Will try to get better pics soon.
