Ideas for improving the exterior of my old, ugly house?
Comments (15)Congratulations on your new home!! What fun this can be, taking a nice solid house and making it express your personality! Yes, how much maintenance you want to do outdoors is a key question. But there is a lot you can do that really, once established, won't require a lot of time. I have large garden beds and with good mulching and good plant selection spend very little time in maintenance. Mowing is far more time consuming. I would start with an attractive storm door/front door in a color that complements both the brick and the gray roof(I personally hate orange brick, and I might be picking out a color to paint it, but a whole lot of people must have liked it back then! But with good trim color selection, though, it can look good even to me!) Use that color around the window, too if you can. The idea for a porch or portico is a good one. I think that I would build a nice large patio or deck with a shade structure (can't think what they are called) between the front door and the driveway. I would also create raised beds along the foundation to hide it, balance the patio, and tie the brick to the ground. Fill it with low maintenance plants and shrubs; talk to your local nurseryman for ideas. Avoid yew or other shrubs that tend to quickly become overgrown. You don't want it to become cluttered, but you want to soften and add some interest with groups of varying textures and heights. I think the tree is fine, it just needs some other tree(s) on the other side of the lot to balance it. Might consider window boxes, or some other decorative structure, to give the high short windows an illusion of more depth but with a raised bed foundation planting the plants might serve to balance the windows in the overall structure....See MoreArchitectural style of sinfully ugly stucco house? And how to fix?
Comments (52)I moved from a historic French neighborhood and majestic home pre-dating 1875, which I lovingly restored with salvage materials painstakingly gathered over the course of about 7 years. I may not know anything about the style of our new home (which is, frankly, new construction where I come from) and yes, I happened to find it quite unattractive. But it's ridiculous and inflammatory to cast shame upon me and suggest that I do not know anything about old houses. When you didn't even know what a rafter tail was, then yes I assumed you were someone who was looking to remuddle the house into an HGTV home. I've seen way too many homes of your house vintage ruined because of the owners being clueless. Plus your thread calling this old beauty "sinfully ugly" made me upset, because I imagined another old beauty being destroyed. I looked for over 2 years in my neighborhood to find an old beauty like yours but every single one that saw had been remuddled by whatever had been the latest and greatest of the time and they had not kept the integrity of the house. I apologize if that wasn't you and if like me, you appreciate old homes and will be willing to bring back her beauty. I agree with you that the vinyl windows need to go and be replaced with something appropriate. However I also think the first floor is original to the house and that includes the stairwell windows. Just because the other homes were brick, don't assume this one was. The stucco on this house looks original to the period. The rafter tails are structural to the build and were quite popular....See MoreYet another ugly '70s house post. I'm in dire need of advice.
Comments (8)It is fantastic! I can see why you love the lot. I don't have photoshop but I'm sure you can find someone to take a photo of the house and play around with color & adding texture. I wouldn't try too hard to mask the 70s style -- just update it with more modern colors and textures. I find the lines make the house!!...See MoreThe exterior of my house is ugly and I dont know how to fix it.
Comments (12)Your trees and greenery are beautiful! I imagine that's one of the wonderful things about living in Florida. In my opinion the front of your house could use some help breaking up the flat front. I don't always love pergolas over garage doors, but I think you could put pergolas over each garage door and grow some beautiful vines over them to add some of that natural beauty to the house. A balcony would probably be even better, but more expensive I'm sure. I also think a new paint color would help. The current color is a little blah. I'd be curious how a light muted sage green would look. You might also consider changing the railing around your front stoop to something more open. Maybe just vertical slats like the stairs (but probably closer together for code). Also, consider wrapping the columns holding up your stoop and the roof overhang so that visually they look a little stronger....See Morehoussaon
