Hi. I'm having the same issue. Where you able to find a better solution for this?

I get DG from bulk dirt places. Some will let you bag your own. I have a bunch of 10gallon pots that I bring home the dirt in if I am looking for a small ammount.. Check Landscape suppliers. or Bulk Dirt. In Austin area, Geo dirt and Natural Gardner have it. Also masonry and stone places sometimes have it along with crushed granite, rock and gravel. I often buy it by the cubuc yard. I think I pay about $35 for a cubic yard.

The type of soil one has is important. Wet soils, especially, need a deep gravel base below a path, whether the path is permeable or impermeable, to minimize sinking. Northern states where the ground freezes also need a deep gravel base to prevent heave. A gravel base layer over clay soil can help with alternate shrinkage during dry weather and expansion during wet weather. It's all about keeping the path material where you put it. Desert soil is dry, often with a caliche crust. Such compacted soil probably does not need a gravel layer if you are only adding DG to the surface. However, you also plan to remove and grade the soil where you want to put DG. You should compact the soil before you lay down the DG. Generally, I think one is supposed to use 3" of DG even if there is another base layer below that.

Not a pro, but it sounds like your approach would work well for containing the soil in the beds. When we bought our house we inherited some raised beds that were set on top of landscape fabric with a couple inches of pea gravel around and in between them. It looks pretty but the dirt leaks out from under the planters and soils the gravel. Regarding DG, we also inherited a patio made from it and it is soft and sticky when wet, almost like mud. We are planning to use a stabilizer on it called Technisol, which I’ve just purchased from our local landscape supply company. I think you may need a stabilizer for good results with the DG.
