Does DG (Decomposed granite) have to go on top of gravel base or no?

We have a 1200 sq ft backyard that is a mess of dirt and weeds. Our plan is to remove the top 3” of soil and level the ground out and then add DG. We will also be adding garden beds a paved pathway, etc. but the main ground cover for the yard we would like to be DG.

I am getting confused on the steps for installing DG. I have read that you need both a gravel base and no gravel base. We live in the high desert, northern Nevada and our soil is compact silt but has some rocks. Do we need to add a 1” layer of gravel then 2” layer of DG on top? Or just 3” of DG? We plan to rent a plate compactor and add a stabilizing liquid to the DG.
