Pros and Cons of Thick Mitred Edge Quartz Counters?

Hi there! We're considering doing a thickened mitred edge on the quartz counters for our new kitchen island (which is large - 119" x 41"). I love the look of the thick edge on big islands, but I've been reading some stories about bad fabrication, chipped edges, etc. and now I'm starting to rethink the idea. We've got two active boys, a busy household, and we use our kitchen a TON. The fabricator we're using is supposed to be very reputable, but now I'm nervous about the durability and concerned that I could end up with chips in the counter edge. We're leaning towards doing a white calacatta marble-look quartz, from a company like MSI, LG, or Pental, if that makes any difference. What has your experience been with thickened mitred edge quartz counters? Thanks!

Yes, it’s loud. I’m not saying you shouldn’t love it or that it’s hard to clean, and I, too, get many compliments. Want to know what it sounds like? Take a small plate to a showroom that has a piece and slide it across. We have the leather at our lake house and polished at home, and I like both, the leather because it’s unique, the shiny because it’s so beautiful in my newly remodeled kitchen. My mother-in-law, who is 94, comes to the lake with us and slides EVERYTHING across the leathered granite surface, and by the end of the day my nerves are frazzle.d. Just know what you’re buying and be okay with it. Both are wonderful choices, as far as I’m concerned.

That's how the pre-fab counters are done in my area, so that's what I have. I like it. There's a seam, but I don't notice it.

It's funny to read this thread from 5 years ago hearing people talking about travertine as dated. My wife and I just bought a house and it is a pretty big upgrade to go from the included tile backsplash to a travertine backsplash. I guess my point is, and I doubt anyone is even reading this anyway 5 years later, but my point is that I agree with the people that say go with what you like and don't worry about anyone else's opinions. It's your house. Why do people always concern themselves with how other people will like their things, when they are not the ones spending all their time there.

Donna- Mitering like that is often done if you want the countertop material to look thicker, but don't have a slab the desired thickness. In addition, it saves money and weight since you can go with standard thickness material and only make the edges thicker. When done well, the miter is essentially invisible, unlike simply doubling up the edge thickness by laminating strips to the underside of the edges of the counter. Mitering also allows you to make the apparent thickness any dimension you want. You can see what the actual thickness of the countertop material is by looking at the sink cutout in the photo in the OP's first post.

This hinges on two questions: material quality and fabricator skill. I went with Silestone when I did my built-up mitred counters in five rooms (five years ago) and have had no chipping. But that's because my fabricator was great and does solid-surface work only.

Ensure you get a great result by working with a fabricator who comes highly recommended, who creates a full physical template of your counter plan, and who understands your expectations about finish quality and durability.

Do your homework and you can work together for lasting results that will stand the test of time. Cheers!

This is old school. Nothing wrong with it, but it's obsolete technology. If you disqualify a fabricator because he templates digitally, you're a fool.
