Yikes. Just realized hallway only 3 ft wide--anything we can do?
Comments (37)The vestibule seemed to be jumping off the screen so I had to draw it. I'm glad it worked out. When I look at a design I automatically reach for a pen and tracing paper. People make fun of the fact that I always have a half dozen different colored felt tipped pens in my pocket and don't know how they got there. My former boss would hold his hand out palm up and I would put a pen in it. I recently left my pocket scale at a client's home and have been so miserable I ordered a half dozen of them. Sometimes it helps to draw the plan by hand with furniture, people, feature highlights and circulation arrows. Plan weaknesses will quickly become evident and solutions will sometimes seem to jump out at you when you are free of hard straight lines, dimensions and the burden of keeping what has already been drawn. It also helps to turn the sheet around and imagine walking through spaces from another direction. It doesn't have to be pretty; it's only for you. Few of these sketches are kept more than an hour and often I don't look at them when drawing the final on the computer; it's just an exercise. IMO unless you're using up a lot of tracing paper you're limited to reorganizing other people's ideas and those ideas can easily get out of proportion and not fit together as well as they originally did....See MoreHow do average people afford down payments, Part 2
Comments (77)NC RE Guy- We have a terrific A/C guy who actually fixes stuff. Your question reminded me....the tenant in our 2nd floor condo calls us for everything. Fortunately it's only a few miles away, but she has no idea what to do if the A/C stops working and I do all the troubleshooting myself - (once the thermostat needed a new battery, once the drain was plugged up (easy fix with a shop vac) and once the repairman had to put in a new circuit board - yay! - didn't try to sell us a new unit even though this was really old). We've had to replace the hot water heater which was leaking and the catch tray that was installed with a big hole in it (!?!!?), not difficult to do ourselves. The auto garage-door opener was the worst. She called one of those companies that came out and declared we needed a new one to the tune of $350 or something (she paid for the service call of $100 or so since we did not authorize it). My husband made a trip to the local Ace Hardware and replaced the belt drive for about $5. That was about two years ago and it's been working fine since then. Same local A/C guy, our home A/C needed a new electrical something (can't remember) so that was $130 or so, and then a few weeks later mid-summer, he sold us a new fan for the cooling unit which we installed ourselves because he was too busy for a few days - nobody else would sell us the proprietary Trane part since we weren't authorized service people. That was awesome of him to do that. Unfortunately, the leaks are going to have us replace the whole thing before next summer no matter what. We've also changed out the 2nd circuit board on our pool heater after the warranty ran out (chewed up by fruit rats both times, now protected by a wire cage). The salt generator needed a new circuit board, but that one was covered. I just put new wings and feet on the pool vac. A used-to-be SubZero but no-longer-authorized guy fixed our fridge for next-to-nothing (another electrical do-dad). Anyway, yes, there are still people around who fix stuff, but honestly, they can only fix stuff that is high quality to start with. Friends of ours with a bike shop have a difficult time with folks who bring in their cheap big-store bikes to get fixed up and there's pretty much nothing they can do for them. Our last no-name dryer (came with the house) was not worth fixing when we could buy a brand-new dented high-quality one for the same price at the Sears Outlet store. Basically, there are the fix-it people and the people who have to call for service or just replace. Fix-it is definitely a more frugal way to go. I mean, I'm always amazed that there are people who don't know how to change a tire in their own car. Really? That's the lowest level of fix-it and everyone should be able to do it - it's so easy! I just wish my tenant was even just a little bit of a fix-it person! (batteries? really?)...See MoreHow do people parent like this?!
Comments (15)"I wonder if BM did not say something that she might have even thought was completely innocent ("Oh, you had pajamas like that when you were just a tiny little baby") and that was why SS cut the feet off. Cutting feet off PJ's because one's feet are hot does not really make sense to me." DH said the same thing to me----that he, too, wondered if someone had made a comment. He asked BM and she said no, she didn't; but it is possible that SS's stepsister (who is 13) could have. Over here, SS LOVES to wear the footed jammies---so much so that he will complain if none are clean, even though he has lots of other non-footed PJ sets at our house. I agree, cutting the feet off was a bizarre thing to do----one would *think* he would have just changed clothes! I told DH it reminded me of when SS was in kindergarten at a Catholic school, wearing a uniform. The pants were dark tan khakis and we bought him his at Gap----but they were slightly different from the generic khakis sold at the school uniform store, though the handbook said ANY tan khakis would do. Anyway, SS's had a pocket on one side that the other boys' did not. Every day, SS would come home from school with an extra pair of khakis in his backpack----size 6 which were TOO large for him. (He is super tiny.) He kept telling BM and DH that his teacher hated the pants he wore. BM blew up (shocker) and called the teacher ranting about how if she had a problem with SS's pants, she needed to talk to her or DH----NOT send a too-big-pair-of-pants home with SS in a passive aggressive way. The teacher gently told BM that SS had rummaged through the "extra clothes bin" (for kids who had had accidents, etc) and found the pair himself and kept taking them home. When pressed, BM and DH found out that SS was mortified that his pants had "an extra pocket." He has ALWAYS struggled terribly with his feelings and emotions. :( It's terribly sad. You would have thought he would have just said, "Hey mom" or "hey dad," "My pants look different---I feel weird." But no. He has such trouble expressing his emotions and processing his thoughts. I totally think someone may have commented on the jammies, making him uncomfortable! Cutting the feet off is just too strange!...See MoreBad people - and a WARNING! (long story)
Comments (19)Holy mackeral! She must have been totally out of it to be able to get from the floor onto the couch and sit there (and talk!) with a broken hip! I've had a broken hip and know what it's like. Wishing her a speedy recovery, physically and emotionally. Good time to remind of some basic information. One thing this reminds me of though is if you are going to call 911 you should try to use a landline if possible for a speedier response. Most if not all 911 dispatch will have your address as you call - they won't have that with a large number of cell phones. Cell phone is fine if you don't have a landline but the first thing you say is your address and include the zip code, repeat it even, so they have it and can do a 911 transfer to the local authorities and they can then dispatch assistance. Program yourself to say the address, zip, assistance needed and your name. Practice it if you're that afraid because if you're panicked you might not remember things. Write your address, phone # and name if need be on your landline phone so you can give it to them. Calling from a cell, having to trace the towers and location of the call if there's no tracking on it and trying to find you wastes a lot of time. There's been how many disappearing people, kidnaps, etc, where they have to try to trace and guess locations of people. I know it varies from locale but in Minnesota, cell phone calls are sent automatically to the Highway Patrol dispatch, not your local police. It'll have to be transferred to the local, which takes time, then repeating things, more time, and if the person is not communicating well, then even more time. Also, one of the simplest safety devices is the little peephole in the door. Refusing to open the door will not stop a break in and having a description of the suspect so you can call 911 (via landline preferably) will help a lot. Pay attention. Is there a vehicle in your driveway? How's your outdoor lighting? Stay safe all....See MoreFeathers11
