Did you lose your fingernail during chemo?? I didn't,but they sure turned ugly.

How are you doing now?? Hope i don't have you mixed up with someone else,but i don't think so.

Oh! i didn't know that you lose your fingernails after chemo. Learn something new everyday, huh?

Imagine the look on my face, as my jaw hit the floor, after my dad had his last kidney removed. It came to me as a shock when I realized he wouldn't pee anymore.

Oooh, I'm really Badddd! We have an acre and 1/3rd. I have hundreds of fruiting varieties of trees/shrubs/vines. Not counting the veggie gardens or herbs, or indoor/foliage/flowering/useless plants. It doesn't look like anywhere near that number! I plant in groups, and still have lots in containers on the patio. It adds up in a hurry. Last time I counted I had 50 Citrus. Yet, we still have lots of lawn left. I like to get all the varieties available in each plant grouping, such as all the dwarf Mangoes. Smaller plants mean I have room for more(G). One day I'll get a complete list together, and then I'll be horrified at what I have spent over the years. But, having fruit ripening all year round is so cool and such delicious fun! I really like roaming my yard, picking fresh foods every day! I encourage you all to grow your own fruit/veggies. Then you have control over your food, a easy way to execise, and a stress relief from day to day living. This morning I picked Papayas, Red Limes, Satsumas, Figs, Bearrs Lemons, Calamondins, Bananas, Barbados Cherries, Meyer lemons, Muntingias and Macadamia nuts. Oh, and 15 fresh eggs from the henhouse! Some problems w/some bulbs I didn't get planted - need your opini

Hi Deanna, Bulbs store energy for the plant that can tide it over during rough times. So, rotted stems are like busted stems, as long as the bulb is large enough to support itself through next year (its not a tiny bulblet) it will come back, just a little smaller. This may result in a smaller plant with fewer blooms the first season but it will otherwise be fine. The thing to check is whether or not the bulbs have healthy looking roots. In the Fall if you find that the bulb and roots are rotten I wouldn't bother to plant it. Stressed bulbs often will decide to take a season off and not send up foliage (or abort growth already started). Instead it will spend its time growing new roots. So that doesn't mean they are dead. It sounds like your stems got the fungal disease botrytis possibly from overwatering. With your curled up new sprouts (possibly lieing along the soil) this would be an easy thing to have happen. Putting late planted bulbs in pots is usually a good idea since you can use sterile well draining soil and, depending on where you put the pot, control watering and sun. So don't hesitate to do that in the future. Botrytis strikes plenty of lilies in the garden as well. I'd cut away any diseased foliage (and throw it out securely) and spray the remaining foliage and the pots soil surface with a rose fungal spray. How do I tell painter I see where he primed, and didn't add paint

Oopsie, I plan on talking to him. Because I have seen his temper I'm afraid of what he may do, not sure why? When he let me know that the wood grain was going to show thru in the front of the cabinets, said how that wasn't included in the sanding and spackling, I agreed to give him 200 extra, even though DH and I knew it was included, wanted it done right. When he let me know his estimate for painting skylight, sofit and walls didn't include ceiling, he thought it was going to be another extra. Who would expect a job with (new lighting,under counter lighting, granite counertops, carpentry, crown molding, floor, added pull outs, new appliences)not to have ceiling painted? At this point I just want to pay him for what he has done and get him out of my house. If I have to stay home with him while he paints the inside frame with 2 coats of paint, I will sit in the kitchen and watch. Is there anyway of me telling if he did the agreed on 2 coats of paint on the front part of my cabinets? Since he told me several times it wasn't necessary to give 2 coats of paint, I feel he didn't do it,even though he said he did, obviously I don't trust him any more. When he paints the frames he will have to cover my granite, and will also have to take the doors off (inside hindges), do I tell him this, or assume he will do this the proper way? I'm afraid the quality of this work won't be the same, which is why I ageed to the price he gave me. My mistake was looking at his own house as an example of his work, in my home he cut as many corners as he could, in his own home he cut no corners. He has also told me several times that for the "money I paid him and for my doors I could have had a new kitchen", till I asked him never to say that again. He has made other comments, which have done what they are suppose to do, shut me up and get me out of the kitchen! Thanks in advance for your help.

Reggie, When I met my DH, I was 29 years old and I knew then that I didn't want to have children. He has three children and he would also see them every other weekend. Believe me, I did find it hard when they were around. I especially found it hard with the oldest child who right from the start did not like me at all. With time, I started disliking it when she would come over to our house because what missy wanted, missy got! It would just infuriate me and for years I had arguments with hubby about the way he treated this child, never, ever, ever saying no to whatever she asked for. Well, she grew up to be a spoiled, irreponsible child.She quit school early, got pregnant at 16 years old, got in-debth, etc. etc. etc. She got married and treated her husband just like she had treated her dad all her life, that is, when she asked for something, she had to get it NOW, her husband is the one who was stuck with cleaning the house, taking care of the children, etc. etc. That marriage did not last long needless to say. Today, she is divorced and she has had to make major changes in her life. And I must admit that she has matured quite a bit in the last two years and she is now in a new relationship and believe me, she doesn't treat that man the way she treated her x. But I find it so sad that she has had to go through all these experiences at such a young age. I sometimes think if her father had spoiled her less and had felt less guilty towards her, this child wouldn't have had to go through such negative experiences when she was so young. Today, my relationship with this step-daughter is good but it was hell getting there. I always told her that at 20 years old, she had gone through what a 40 year old woman would have gone through. So sad. This being said, I feel for you. I know you have been with this man for several years, but believe me, he will never, ever agree with you if you say anything wrong about his child, whether it's about the fact that you think she goes to bed too late or she is really childish or whatever. He will always defend her no matter how much he loves you. And believe me, this little girl's demands are going to become more and more big as she grows up. Whatever she will want from her father, I guarantee you she will get it and that will cause major, major fights between you and him! Believe me, I've been there. I have been with hubby for 20 years now and there were many times that I said to myself, if i knew then, what I do know now in regards to being a step-parent, I don't know if I would have started a relationship with him. So, all I can say to you from experience is you either have to accept this child in your life and try and detach yourself from her with love or....leave this man. I know you love him but you will drive yourself mad and make yourself sick to death if you continue in this relationship knowing there is a child that will always, always be there. Sometimes, in order to understand my husband's behavior towards his child, I would sit down for a minute and wonder what would I do if that was my child. Most of the time, when I truly thought about it, I thought I would do the same thing he did. These men love their children to death and they feel really guilty about not being in their life 24/7 and because of this, they will do anything an everything for them just so these children will be happy and not hate their father. I was blessed to keep my fingernails, but the toenails are a different ugly thang alltogether. I've been thru 2 chemo and radiation treatments.

Sorry you lost your nails, Kat. I can understand it, tho, with everything you've been thru.

I didn't realize that one could lose their nails due to the treatments either, Kat. Not just the things you can't do but the sensitivity of the fingertips would be a huge adjustment. Will they regrow? You certainly are going thru the ringer, sweetie. Big hugs to you.

I didn't realize it either, and I'm glad you posted this, Kat. Later in the winter, when my fingertips are covered with frostbite from Raynaud's, and I start counting the number of fingernails I'll lose, I'll think of you and all you've been through and I won't be tempted to whine, even to myself.

At least I hope I won't. :-)

Lynn, what happens is that the nail gets damaged at the base, when it's still under the skin before it emerges. So when it grows out and becomes visible, it's all deformed. If the damage is bad enough, the nail will fall off. Usually only part of the nail will fall off. It's an attractive look. :-)

Most years my fingernails and fingertips look normal only for a few weeks in late summer. Because we've had such a warm autumn, my fingers--all ten of them!--look normal right now. This is unusual. I'm enjoying the sight, knowing it won't last.

I sort of know the feeling Kat. I have always had long nails, but when one breaks, I can't pick up anything!

When I lost a lot of my hair from my inhaler this spring, I started using the supplement Biotin. Most of my hair is back and my fingernails are growing like crazy! Maybe you can check with your dr. about taking it. I get mine at Rite-Aid or GNC but mosy anywhere with a pharmacy will carry it.

I took Biotin when I was pregnant, my hair and nails got very lush and grew like crazy.

Sorry that you're having to cope with this, Kat WA ... along with all of the other stuff. The big problems aren't the whole of it, are they?

If it's a needle (or other slim metallic thing) ... will a magnet work?

Kat, I'm another one that didn't know you could lose your nails. Aren't your fingers really sensitive without them? I appreciate your sharing those things with us. We never know when we may be going through what you are, but at least you will have us better prepared. Plus you're a great role model for attitude. I don't know if I could be as brave as you.

As i said my nails didn't fall off but they were grey striped,and red spots,yet they were very strong,and i'll never figure that one out.I actually used one of my nails to screw a screw back into something that had become loose.

Now that chemo is over,my nails are no longer discolored,and they grow but are very soft.I was going to try the biotin,but when i read the label it had soy in it,and i have to steer clear of soy as well,so i didn't buy it.

Kat ,i hear ya,when it comes to picking things up,i told DH the other day when i went back to work years ago after having kids,i got the job i applied for because i had good finger dexterity,now i have trouble picking up the pills i have to take!!!

Hope your nails come back nice and strong,and your hair too if you lost it.

i'm looking at the top of my desk just wondering how i'd pick up that dime or any of a hundred things i daily need...

your courage under the rad "gun" is amazing...i used to lay there and count the number of seconds the machine was on...nothing remotely like a body scan, i'm sure...

as expressed earlier, thank you for sharing with us...i believe we have to get informtion out..then everyone won't be so scared of the unknown...(((kat)))

nah... it's no big deal! Alisande, I have no pain, per se. Only when the old nail ripped off from the bed! They are a little tender around the bed.
lol I feel badly for all of you with ranauds.
