2. paint the screen door and the main door the same color. creamy yellow or sage greens work well with this brick or even a pop of blue.

3. remove the railing from the porch. Have you considered lengthening the porch?

4. paint the garage door a color that is not so stark possibly a beige

5. i would extend the cement over to the right for the porch and then plant in front of it . hostas, tiger lilies variegated shrubs, annuals, and junipers

I would go with a fairly dark gray for the shutters, garage door and downspouts. Either a neutral gray or something with a greenish tinge.

I would keep the shutters. The purists will tell you that shutters should look authentic, as if they could cover the window, so they should only be used with "portrait" shape windows, not your "landscape" style. However, your windows would look quite bare since you don't have a lot of trim around them. I would keep the shutters.

I would get rid of the shutters. They're the wrong size and don't flatter the house. You could add some nice flowering hedges in the front to add seasonal color to the space. I would also remove the fencing around the front entry way. Is there any was you could replace the light fixture at the front as well?

No pro here and my own exterior needs a serious facelift but here are my thoughts for your house. First of all, congrats on your new home! Very exciting (and perhaps a bit overwhelming). Second, I like shutters. :) I agree with partim. They add something on a ranch house like this. No, they're not functional nor are they fooling anyone they are but they add colour and detail on a large expanse of brick. I like your brick, btw. I agree about removing the railing. It doesn't add anything here. I'd consider lengthening the porch as proposed by RL Relocation. A curved path to the driveway would soften all the straight lines and feel welcoming, I think. You've gotten great advice on colours. I agree with beefing up the entry light, address numbers and painting the garage door to match the trim colour you end up choosing. Landscaping will add much appeal to this house as evidenced by RL and Dig Doug's pics. Good luck, enjoy the process (remember: you don't have to do everything at once!) and please keep us posted. :)

Whatever colors you choose, get a sample pot and paint a large piece of board or cardboard in that color. Look at it at different times of day since the light changes. We see too many sad posts on Houzz where people have been disappointed in the way a color looks over larger areas, and in outdoor light.

When you do your plants, make your beds at least 6 feet deep. That may seem huge, but you need to have the first foot along your house bare, so you can access it for maintenance. Then, any decent size shrubs will probably be about 4 feet wide at maturity. (Check your tag on online where you'll see this information. ) That leaves you a foot in front of the shrubs if you want to plant any annuals. When you plant a shrub that's 4 feet wide at maturity, the center of the planting hole should be 3 feet from your house (2 feet from the center to the edge of the mature shrub, plus one foot space to house.)

Before your shrubs are mature it may look a bit bare. Just plant self-seeding annuals in between and you'll plant fewer every year as the shrubs grow. I like annual white sweet alyssum which doesn't have deep roots and won't interfere with the shrubs' growth. Or use native plants that behave the same way. (We don't know where you live.) It's less expensive and more beautiful than mulching a large area with bark chips, and it will come back from seed next year. Google "green mulch" and you'll see what other have to say about this idea.

If there is someone in your neighborhood whose front garden you admire, stop by when they are outside and ask about it. I have given so many cuttings and divisions of my garden plants to people.
