What products/steps will bring new life to wood in historic home?
Comments (4)Putting oil on top of an old varnish is asking for trouble down the road. You can always renew shellac without stripping, the same could not be said for topcoating with oil. Wax applied to shellac with 4/0 steel wool yields a very fine satin finish of amazing silkiness. Casey...See MoreHelp me bring this house up to the next level please.
Comments (17)Thanks so much everyone for the insight that was given on this post, I really appreciate you all taking the time to help me out! It's great to 'see' this thing through fresh eyes. All of the posts have been really helpful pointing out the issues with the house, door, shutters, plants, etc. I'm going to sit down with my DH tonight and talk to him about how we want to proceed from here to correct the problems. The roof will probably take two more steady weekends of work, so I have a little play time to make a decision and look further for a door replacement. I think that I'll remove the shutters this weekend too and look for door before I make any type of decision new ones. Johnatemp, that door is just beautiful! Cameron, Isn't the rain wonderful? :) Of course we had to laugh since it hasn't rained here in three month, but we strip the roof and here comes the monsoons! *LOL* I hope it's helping with the water level in the reservoirs. I know that our plants and lawn have certainly perked up, the lawn was all but dead and I was starting to wonder if we'd lose our weeping willow. We live West of you, a little South of Winston Salem. The last past two days here have been a good steady rain, I hope you all in Chapel Hill are getting a good soaking too!! :)...See MoreTrying to bring my yard back to life
Comments (23)Bermuda will quickly give you a spotty look if mowed wrong or with a dull blade, so keep that in mind. My method isn't very special or scientific, but it makes for a consistent color at any time. Bermuda can take a lot of abuse & won't burn up in the sun, so have fun with it--you can't kill it with anything but shade. You will have mountains of clippings, so work on your soil biology to help break it all down. If it starts getting scraggly & tall looking, check that thatch layer & dont let it build up....See MoreHelp bring life to my dining room please
Comments (28)I made my own runner and matching placemats. My table measures in the 50's. I used about one yd of fabric. No, I do not have a sewing machine. I hand sewed everything. It's not hard, just turning the edges under, and doing an invisible stitch on the underside. By doing this, I saved a decent amt of $, and got to use the fabric that I wanted. It did not take a lot of time. Something that you might consider.! To me, your dining room is crying out for some curtains. Use curtains that are almost sheer. Your room needs something that is light and bright. That's where I would start, and then bring in a coordinating fabric for the runner and placemats. Good luck!...See MoreRL Relocation LLC
