Dog refuses to walk
Comments (11)prairie love you may be right. Hubby and I have been talking about getting someone to help us if it continues. She has gotten better with some things. Hubby thinks its just because she had so little interaction with things when she was young...everything is so new to her. But she has been with us a few months already. I do not know if she afraid of walking or if she does not want to do it. Mazer...she was just at the vet last week and he already checked her out. She is in good shape. She is 45 pounds so a bit too heavy for me to carry. As I write this she is running around the house searching for hubby. When I mentioned that she was afraid of her shadow to the vet he said give her more time because she is still a puppy. She seems to get over her fears eventually...just new ones pop up....she got over her fear of the pole :-) and would jump it when she wanted to...just not on command...in fact when I left it out there with her and went inside to spy on her...she had her toys right up against the pole...I think the many suggestions I have recieved have been quite helpful. My dog is not shivering in her skin so to speak. I have seen dogs do that. But she does seem to be unsure of many things....last night when she tried to run from her shadow I held her in place and spoke to her and told her that it was okay and couldnt hurt her....I petted the shadow and she moved closer to smell it....she finally settled down. I would rather try to solve her problems ourselves as I believe it will make us bond better....but if nothing works we will seek help. But so far this forum has been a blessing. Mazer....we walk her different routes everyday ...we just make sure to always pass by my neighbors eventually. They do not walk their dog....most people in my neighborhood don't and they have some pretty big dogs. We don't have huge yards or anything either....probably why all the other dogs get so worked up. Alot of the dogs also aren't fixed. Her friend is not fixed and we think that's why he always tried to pee on her...to mark her as his so to speak. We have tried to set up play dates for her but nothing really works out. We have been taking her to Bully meet ups to stay socialized, but those aren't nearly often enough. I mentioned this for the stimulus aspect....See Moredog walking etiquette question
Comments (13)Respecting our own space and the space of another is not unfriendly, IMHO. Some people combine a treasured moment to be alone with walking their dog. Some are keeping a fast pace with their dog for a kind of exercise standard and don't want to break their pace by stopping. Some folks are just wanting their dog to have exercise and get home soon. Of course, some people have found that walking their dog has been a nice way to meet their neighbors. At the stage I am at with my doggie, I see meeting another person and dog on the way as a kind of challenge and brightens or clouds my/our day. We are still learning how to behave with others. Bless his heart. Also, a dog's body language will let me know if I want to turn around or cross a street (actually, I don't have another street to cross to). The person walking their dog will also show some body language. Sometimes I'll turn around just because I don't want to set off neighboring dogs to barking -- especially if the walk is very early morning or very late evening. Since I have to walk on a street (no sidewalk), I will walk my dog to the side of the road and wait for a car to pass before I proceed walking. I think that drivers on our semi-remote street appreciate this. At night I use a flashlight so we can be seen....See MoreFees for Dog Sitting
Comments (35)Awwww… that is such a nice thing to say, busybee. We really have fun. The kids in the neighborhood all come over to play with the dogs..it's really great. I go and pick them up after the owners leave, then bring them home before the owners get home, so it's a seamless transition for the owners . But my clients are really great and flexible too. They'll let me pick up their dog a day early if I have to go up to that area to get another one, rather than making two roundtrips in two days, that sort of thing. I have keys or codes to all their houses; if my house is rented and I need a place to live, so many say, "Oh, we're not going to be at (vacation house or main home), go stay there." Can you believe that? Really wonderful peeps. But then, they're dog peeps, which kinda means they have to be cool, right? Lol....See MoreWalking small dogs, what works for you?
Comments (17)When using the gentle leader, I would highly suggest that you attach it to another collar as a back up. They can slip out of them if they pull and if they aren't on correctly. The gentle leader must be put on correctly and it will seem that it's tight but it must be tight as the instructions tell you or they will slip out of them. What I do with my dog is that I put a slip chain collar on her and clip the leash to the loop of the slip chain AND the loop of the gentle leader collar. I had wonderful results with the gentle leader type collar(I actually used a different brand but same concept). If you can do it, I would highly suggest you find a class to take her to so she can be formally trained. It's so easy to do the wrong thing when you think you know how to train and it sends the dog the wrong message. interesting article about slipping the collar...See Morelucillle
