Glenda, if you read my post I am wondering if the al stands for Alabama? My son and daughter are moving around the Birmingham area. Do you know anything about that area weather wise or whatever? We currently live in Michigan which is a cold climate, sounds like Alabama gets a lot of hot humid weather? What do you like about your state? Thank you.

I live on the 280 corridor, Greystone area of Birmingham.

Exremely busy road, due to the desirability of the area. Short distance from me, south, is Chelsea, which is on the rise.

Lived in Alabama all my life, almost 80 now, except for a brief time living in Alexandria, Va.

Weather is great! It's not THAT humid, like Florida. We do have days with high humidity, but they come and go.

Winters are moderate, especially this winter. Very little snow, but then some times we wake up SURPRISED with snow, and sends everyone in a tizzy.

This year we had a very wet winter, which was quite unusual.

Lots to do in and around B'ham.

Schools systems, don't know if you son has concerns, if he has children. Just ask I can give you my opinion, retired teacher, here.

What area of B'ham is he looking to live?

It would be nice to meet you glenda, I would love to do that if and when I move so thank you for that. I have siblings here and a wonderful church family but unfortunately the cold weather really gets to me, it would be so nice not to have the bitter cold winters anymore. Its great that you love where you live, that's a big plus.

Glenda, thank you for taking the time. My daughter just bought a home in the Chelsea area, my son will be renting an apartment until he can find something he likes, its a new career for him. Both my daughter's husband and my son will be working somewhere in Birmingham, I'm not sure where, I know its a big city. The weather sounds very nice, I am an outdoors person and I can really appreciate a warmer climate. I have lived in Arkansas, Texas and Arizona so the warmer weather sounds wonderful to me. I grew up in Michigan and can never quite get used to the bitter cold winters here. I don't know if I will move but I plan on doing some visiting first, I have bad seasonal allergies and need to see if it works for me. No grands in public school there, but my oldest granddaughter will be attending college there. I bet the gardens around there are beautiful. I know in Arkansas and Texas we got some bad storms at times so I would expect some of that in Alabama.

Chelsea is really growing.. Just right down the road from me. Number of friends live there.

Let me know if you plan to move. Would love to have a KT member close.

I moved from Homewood, which is a desirable area. Son lives, now, in the home he grew up in. When he moved in, I bought a condo, in the area I mentioned and so love where I live.

Yes please...that would be wonderful. I have created an indoor type bin this weekend as an example of how to set it up as I only do out door bins using the large free city compost bins..I have 10 going. I will have photos of the large ones for the people to see and I will bring the smaller indoor type. Many thanks Kelly. John

This is what happens when 5 family members use a "basket system" for shoes....totally ridiculous!! We spend 5 minutes each morning searching for our shoes and invariably need to pull EVERY shoe out of the basket, then need to dump them all back in after you have the missing shoe. From Misc photos The photo above is because we are currently living at my mom's while we remodel and I have always had a mudroom with SHELVES or shoe racks for placing shoes in. I will have shelves under the cubbies for each child and not bins, for shoes. Flip flops can be stacked, boots can be placed side-by-side and any stray hats/caps/scarves can be hung on hooks along with jackets. I am not someone that can deal with clutter, so I will have a door on my mudroom so that it is not visible to anyone other than those who walk in through my garage or side door. Phones go in a central charging area so that the kids are not on the phone until all hours of the night--totally just my pet peeve and control issue :) The open locker/cubbies will have three hooks and a shelf above each one. Shelf can hold misc sports junk. Backpack sits on the bottom of the cubby (14" deep) and there's an extra 10" in front of that for sitting. If you are still in the framing stage, have the contractor fill in between the studs with wood at about the height you want the wall of hooks--that way no worries about hitting studs, just screw in anywhere along that line....you can put hooks every 6" or so and have as many as there's space for. Here is my hook wall in my mudroom: From Misc photos The other thing my kids will tell you is that about every other month I will freak out and yell and scream that, "The mud room is a disaster!!!" and make them put at least 1/2 of their stuff back in their rooms....eventually it gets dragged out again, but for a short while it looks fairly well organized :)

I've given this a lot of thought and I just can't warm up to idea of the sink on the peninsula and losing space with a counter overhang in what's already a small dining room. I much prefer the sink on the outside wall. We need to keep the office closet and the shower because this is our "aging in place" house, and at some point we might need a downstairs bedroom. This morning our architect and his assistant crawled under the house to take the structural measurements and see what would be possible. There's a city requirement that the garage must be at least 9'x20' which has complicated things a bit because our original plan was eating into the 20' length. The stairs are a limiting factor as well. The new plan is this: steal up to 18 inches from the current furnace/water heater area to allow for cabinets to be recessed, and steal even more from the garage to have space for the fridge. With fridge/cabinets set into the back wall, that gives us 12 feet to work with for the rest of the room. The math so far is: 26" sink/window cabinets 36" aisle 36" island 46" aisle --- 12' The bad news is that there's no room for a double oven, so I've switched the cooktop to a range. The furnace gets moved to the spot just to the left of the door from the hall to the kitchen. We'll have a smaller furnace there because we're going to heat the upstairs from a 2nd furnace in the attic. The plans: The first tall cabinet unit will have to be shallower on top because it's limited by the stairs. The windows can't be centered on the back wall because the new office will come 3 feet into the end of the kitchen. I put in a few more uppers. The island will just be 2 cabinets with a 12" overhang, but I drew it as 4 to get the dimensions right. Maybe I can add another 12" set of drawers on the stove end. Comments welcome!

We live in a downtown condo highrise. We have a galley style kitchen and this configuration is recognized as efficient but it has very little countertop space compared to other types of kitchens. When you remove the counter space needed for a sink and a cooking surface, you are left with a few linear feet of counter here and there. -- We threw away our microwave ten years ago, and we after months of wavering we are_not_getting a new one now that we are planning a complete overhaul of our kitchen. There are now many wall ovens that include microwave as as assist; they can be used in only-microwave function. We might not even buy that. We are getting a (Liebherr) Bio-Fresh fridge so we can concentrate on eating fresh not frozen, and an induction cooktop, and a convection oven. So this answers the question where we intend to put our microwave. We know our microwave oven placement decision is not in the norm, not with the norm, thus not "normal" when compared to the norm. I will keep that in mind, very kind of you to offer glenda! I have never lived in a condo but I think it would be nice not to do all the yard work anymore. I am divorced for many years so no husband to do it!

Hi Katrina Ellen. We have our two sons and their families in Birmingham. We are about 60 miles to the north just outside of Huntsville. Lots of outdoor recreation opportunities in both areas. I’m sure your son will love it since it’s pretty much good weather year-round for something.

One son is in Hoover and the other in the Gardendale/Mt Olive area. Traffic can be a bear due to some road construction but that is true everywhere.

Thanks outside and josephene, I love that there's lots of outside recreation. My family will love that. I really enjoyed Arkansas except for chiggers! Thanks for the link also, always good to know whats going on in the state. I feel like the culture in the southern states is more hospitable than here, I know people are people but I think people are raised different in the south.

katrina, I've lived in the state of Alabama (Huntsville) for a few years and mostly like it. It's certainly beautiful! I'm in awe of the physical beauty in some parts of the state.

But you and your family should know that Birmingham has one of the highest crime rates of any city in the country. Anyone moving into the area needs to research carefully.....there are crime hot spots that should be avoided at all costs.

On the up side, businesses are still moving into the area and it has an active arts, shopping, and restaurant scene. The cost of living is very low compared to other parts of the country, which will be attractive to any retiree.

There are areas of high crime, mainly in Jefferson County, which covers the downtown areas, north, east and west of town.

It all depends on the area of B'ham you live.

I am a resident of Shelby County where there is a big difference in the standard of living and crime rate. Still considered B'ham.

Where I live, Hwy 280, Greystone area, and you son, in Chelsea, is an area most desired.
