Glenda, if you read my post I am wondering if the al stands for Alabama? My son and daughter are moving around the Birmingham area. Do you know anything about that area weather wise or whatever? We currently live in Michigan which is a cold climate, sounds like Alabama gets a lot of hot humid weather? What do you like about your state? Thank you.

I live on the 280 corridor, Greystone area of Birmingham.

Exremely busy road, due to the desirability of the area. Short distance from me, south, is Chelsea, which is on the rise.

Lived in Alabama all my life, almost 80 now, except for a brief time living in Alexandria, Va.

Weather is great! It's not THAT humid, like Florida. We do have days with high humidity, but they come and go.

Winters are moderate, especially this winter. Very little snow, but then some times we wake up SURPRISED with snow, and sends everyone in a tizzy.

This year we had a very wet winter, which was quite unusual.

Lots to do in and around B'ham.

Schools systems, don't know if you son has concerns, if he has children. Just ask I can give you my opinion, retired teacher, here.

What area of B'ham is he looking to live?

It would be nice to meet you glenda, I would love to do that if and when I move so thank you for that. I have siblings here and a wonderful church family but unfortunately the cold weather really gets to me, it would be so nice not to have the bitter cold winters anymore. Its great that you love where you live, that's a big plus.

Glenda, thank you for taking the time. My daughter just bought a home in the Chelsea area, my son will be renting an apartment until he can find something he likes, its a new career for him. Both my daughter's husband and my son will be working somewhere in Birmingham, I'm not sure where, I know its a big city. The weather sounds very nice, I am an outdoors person and I can really appreciate a warmer climate. I have lived in Arkansas, Texas and Arizona so the warmer weather sounds wonderful to me. I grew up in Michigan and can never quite get used to the bitter cold winters here. I don't know if I will move but I plan on doing some visiting first, I have bad seasonal allergies and need to see if it works for me. No grands in public school there, but my oldest granddaughter will be attending college there. I bet the gardens around there are beautiful. I know in Arkansas and Texas we got some bad storms at times so I would expect some of that in Alabama.

Chelsea is really growing.. Just right down the road from me. Number of friends live there.

Let me know if you plan to move. Would love to have a KT member close.

I moved from Homewood, which is a desirable area. Son lives, now, in the home he grew up in. When he moved in, I bought a condo, in the area I mentioned and so love where I live.

"The bulblets make good "pearl" onions. The base plant is a satisfactory green onion when young, but there are lots of easier ways to produce green onions." If you throw the bulblet clusters on the ground, or just let them drop, they grow... it doesn't get much easier than that. ;-) They are hardy enough to become weeds. Mine literally come up through the last snows, and are my first fresh "veggie" of the year. Personally, I love the taste of the scallions; very mild when cooked. You can harvest them twice a year, in late Spring & again in early Autumn. Pnbrown, you & I had previously discussed these onions on another thread. I divided some of my plants this year & transplanted them individually into good soil. They did indeed form a moderately large onion at the base, up to 2" wide. They make good fresh onions now, when everything else is dead - thanks for the tip. There are actually heirloom cultivars of topsetting onions available. I am currently growing four of them: "Caudell Heirloom", "Comstock", "Knox Heirloom" and "Catawissa". The first three (all obtained through the Seed Savers Exchange) are now going into their third year, and are multiplying well. I again divided & replanted them in different locations last week, so I will see if my observations on their performance hold true next year... when I hope to have enough topsets to do a few trades. The "Knox" has proven to be far stronger than the others. The bulblets tend to be fewer in number, but much larger - many well over 1". The plants are also more vigorous, each plant dividing into 5-6 at the base (as opposed to 2-3 for the others). The flavor of the scallions has a little more bite than "Catawissa", which is still my main scallion.

Yes please...that would be wonderful. I have created an indoor type bin this weekend as an example of how to set it up as I only do out door bins using the large free city compost bins..I have 10 going. We live in a downtown condo highrise. We have a galley style kitchen and this configuration is recognized as efficient but it has very little countertop space compared to other types of kitchens. When you remove the counter space needed for a sink and a cooking surface, you are left with a few linear feet of counter here and there. -- We threw away our microwave ten years ago, and we after months of wavering we are_not_getting a new one now that we are planning a complete overhaul of our kitchen. There are now many wall ovens that include microwave as as assist; they can be used in only-microwave function. We might not even buy that. We are getting a (Liebherr) Bio-Fresh fridge so we can concentrate on eating fresh not frozen, and an induction cooktop, and a convection oven. So this answers the question where we intend to put our microwave. We know our microwave oven placement decision is not in the norm, not with the norm, thus not "normal" when compared to the norm. Not everyone knows their zone or even understands what it means. Say there was a poster from Saudi Arabia, for example, or China. If they would just put roughly their region into their name it might helpful. Marie: if people included their zone and/or their city/region in their name as it shows up upon posting, especially when they posted a question about a IDing a shrub, then it would be a lot easier to ID it without having to ask a lot of followup questions...which may or may never get answered by the original poster (OP). So, it would save me, the ID'er and the OP time. So it is critical information for certain questions or posts, but not all. I dont' want to have to click on their name to try to find more information -- which may or may not be there. Also, I see you have a (6) by your name -- assume that is zone? A zone number by itself is somewhat helpful, but a cold desert zone 6 is completely different than a Mid-Atlantic zone 6, so there is still some ambiguity in that. A region of a state would be a helpful addition, for example...SW Ohio or Eastern Colorado Plains.

I will keep that in mind, very kind of you to offer glenda! I have never lived in a condo but I think it would be nice not to do all the yard work anymore. I am divorced for many years so no husband to do it!

Hi Katrina Ellen. We have our two sons and their families in Birmingham. We are about 60 miles to the north just outside of Huntsville. Lots of outdoor recreation opportunities in both areas. I’m sure your son will love it since it’s pretty much good weather year-round for something.

One son is in Hoover and the other in the Gardendale/Mt Olive area. Traffic can be a bear due to some road construction but that is true everywhere.

Thanks outside and josephene, I love that there's lots of outside recreation. My family will love that. I really enjoyed Arkansas except for chiggers! Thanks for the link also, always good to know whats going on in the state. I feel like the culture in the southern states is more hospitable than here, I know people are people but I think people are raised different in the south.

katrina, I've lived in the state of Alabama (Huntsville) for a few years and mostly like it. It's certainly beautiful! I'm in awe of the physical beauty in some parts of the state.

But you and your family should know that Birmingham has one of the highest crime rates of any city in the country. Anyone moving into the area needs to research carefully.....there are crime hot spots that should be avoided at all costs.

On the up side, businesses are still moving into the area and it has an active arts, shopping, and restaurant scene. The cost of living is very low compared to other parts of the country, which will be attractive to any retiree.

There are areas of high crime, mainly in Jefferson County, which covers the downtown areas, north, east and west of town.

It all depends on the area of B'ham you live.

I am a resident of Shelby County where there is a big difference in the standard of living and crime rate. Still considered B'ham.

Where I live, Hwy 280, Greystone area, and you son, in Chelsea, is an area most desired.
