Geographic limits of midge- your input requested
Comments (99)It depends if you want to go the organic route or not. Moses sprays just the new growth with Bayer Insect 3 in 1 is a systemic if applied as a soil drench which amkes any part of the plant toxic but spraying just the new growth and tiny buds is less toxic. If the bud is larger than a green pea it should not be susceptible to midge at that point. Others use Spinosad on just the new growth and buds. Both are very toxic to bees though so caution is necessary. Moses sprays at dusk when the bees are not active. I have rinsed the soil then potted the roses up in purchased potting soil then wrapped the pot with a plastic shopping bag tied around the cane base to try to keep any midge from dropping into the potted soil. These will be going in the ground pot and all over the winter here in MA. and planted next spring. I'll rinse the soil from the roots again and keep an eye on new growth for signs of midge. It seems it takes a while to eradicate this scourge from the garden. I've also used the yellow cups, in my case pinwheels, sprayed with vegetable oil to catch the midge as they fly around. Patty from IL has had very good luck with the cup method as has Samuel from NY. I am catching insects just not quite sure if they're midge or something else. It seems it's a long drawn out process to rid your garden of midge but taking precautions should help a lot. Jim and Samuel are also trying beneficial nematodes to see if this will help. Here's a link to that discussion. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/4834388/jim-in-pa-and-samuel-in-adirondacks-which-nematodes?n=57 and here's Moses routine- http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/4331751/rose-midgean-approach-that-works-for-me?n=18 Hope this helps. Comments (11)i use a microwave to heat popcorn and leftovers. i personally don't consider it an "important" appliance. i don't want to spend a lot of money on something that is so easily replaced (sort of like an old boyfriend). mine's going behind a door. it can be switched out for new any time i tire of him. the rest of appliances? those are keepers and i'm willing to commit to them....See MoreDo you ever argue with your cabinets? Comments (47)What is it about bunnies?! They're just too cute. : ) Rebunky, I've been doing image searches galore, and I did not see that image. Thank you for posting it! I do like the black hood in that image. And the island. : ) We have the drawers for the cabinet under the cooktop, but DH had them removed when I took the photo. He's got the Eastlake piece framed already. He would have probably hung the hood and cover yesterday, but our countertops came in Tuesday afternoon, so he spent the whole day yesterday on getting those ready to install instead! I should have a working sink and cooktop today-hooray!!!! I don't know what type of glass door is coming in for our corner cabinet. Isn't that crazy? The guy that ordered them for us hasn't had any come in in our line of cabinets yet, and they weren't pictured in the catalog. So, we all get to be surprised. : P I picked up some (more) paint cards at the home stores a few nights ago. I was going to get sample pots of paint at Lowes or Home Depot, but Ace Hardware has got theirs on sale for $.99 this week, so I'll get them there instead. I've got a few blacks I'm looking at, as well as a dark bluish green, and a golden cream that I'm considering for the hutch. I wish you the best with your backsplash! I don't think that's an easy decision. We looked through wall tiles on our shopping trip, and very few "spoke" to us. I would definitely need to take lots of breaks and think about other people's kitchens in the decision making process, too. LOL...See MoreRobo and AKT, per your request
Comments (70)Thanks, Robo. Boulders can be tricky to get to look natural. But when they look right I do really like them. Thanks, Rocky. Picture of ...? AKTillery, Ahh, you can barely measure it in months... It's only our third summer so we are still getting into the groove. We don't come up much in off seasons (ThxG and NYears) but some family members do. In summer, what with the kids' activities, we are probably here 10 days and home 3 or 4, then back again. I "commute" to my office one day a week from here - it's a quick flight. Next year I am shooting for basing ourselves here for all three months of summer. Westsider, Oh it is cold! That was why I was only interested in property where we could put in a (heated!) pool. I grew up going to the "Jersey shore" and that water was usually low 70s. Here you are lucky if it is high 60s. My kids stay in but when I go to the beach I go in to cool off and then come back out in the sun. Beagles, Funny you should say that, that is exactly my sticking point. I did not like the angles of the original hot tub stone, so I said I wanted it curvilinear (like the decking). But it is totally different; it is rounded and the color is much more rusty. I have been really pondering if I want to change it. Thankfully, i keep looking at it IRL, in different light and I think it is fine. But not really what I asked for. Sigh....See Morefriedajune
