Help picking waterline pool tile

I have narrowed it down,,,we are having our pool completely refinished, but can't pick between the more classic versatile look or the more modern trendy iridescent look?... i feel like the iridescent is definitely more beautiful but I feel like maybe its too "fancy" for my simple coastal look.... don't want to break the bank, but also want something that will add to the esthetics of the area.... welcome ideas as well

OK I see what you mean now...more casual beach house style with a little boho...I do see how your first instinct is to do the plain colored tiles over the bling.

Is the new surface the Pebble Tec Caribbean Blue? Sounds like what I have. You will get a little sparkle off that on sunny days.

Oh but the iridescent will be so pretty with the sun shining on it. :) But the other one reminds me of sea glass. They are both nice and colorful so what is the style of your pool? Water features? Shape? Perhaps one would work better depending on what other features you have going on.

Wow! I was quoted! I'm so honored. It's true. Your stone is the beautiful frame, your water is the picture, and your tile is the mat. It shouldn't take away from the other two, unless it is a feature. At first I thought, definitely the gray, but as I looked at it, it could also be the color of one of the lighter gray rocks in your stone (I see two of the stones in the second set of pictures under the pvc pipe). That might be more of a gradual transition between the rock and the gray finish and blue water. I LOVE your stone. Our tile would probably be too dark for you, but we used Daltile Continental Slate in Asian Black. Lots of grays and brown it it too. http://www.daltileproducts.com/series.cfm?series=38#608 The tile is great. The only trouble that we had in the beginning (and now again, see below) is that the grout put out calcium. Our pool builder didn't know how to get rid of it, and poured chems. right on the grout and it ate it up. After a while, I tried spraying vinegar on it and scrubbing a little and it came right off. This was on our 360 degree spa that has water running on it everyday. The waterline has had no problems since. We had them come back to regrout the spa, and we do have a couple of areas that show calcium again. I guess it's time to get out the vinegar again. It should stop soon. Now others might want to chime in on this one, but you might want to seal the grout. We didn't, and I don't know if that would have helped. Here's some pictures of our spa and the tile. Pebble Tec does not have any tiles. When it comes to selecting tiles I tell my clients two things due to the hard water and evaporation here in the desert. The less grout the better IE the larger 6x6 tiles. These larger tiles used to be an upgrade but now there are many in the standard #1 & #2 groups. Fujiwa carries some nice lines. The second thing is color and finish. We get a lot of scale buildup and you will see it a lot sooner and it will look worse on darker color tiles,(black is the worst.The smooth shiny finish tiles look more offensive with a scale buildup than the textured finish tiles or stone. Get some samples and check the hardness of the glaze by trying to scrape it off with the corner of a small screwdriver. With a good glazed tile you will just see gray on the tile where the metal came off the screwdriver tip where you scraped it. Caribbean Blue is out #1 selling P/T color. If you look at the colors of the pebbles themselves you will see that they will tie into a lot of natural colors of tile.

Hi Krista! Wow, it’s been so long since I shared this, I had forgotten about it. i decided against the concrete coping and went with stone. I selected the Pennsylvania stone and so happy i did! It looks gorgeous and blends in so well with my color scheme with its gray/blue color. I took the picture I posted above and enlarged it below so you can see the stone better. I hope this helps…would love to know your thoughts. Remember that concrete has a greater chance of cracking in time and I think the stone looks more elegant as well as being stronger.

This can't be evaluated properly at a distance because there's no guaranty that anyone's monitor is going to reproduce true colors. You can only get estimates. I would go with grout that most closely matches the tile that's being grouted. With different tiles colors you have to pick your poison.

I would not want all of those grout lines...we have hard water, but a saltwater pool. We get a lot of limescale build up and the grout is terrible to keep looking nice...

jackqtopia no we decided against pebble tee .... going with a FL Gem..... our contractor said he can add as many beads as we would like.. so maybe the more plain tile with the main event being the water? only see 3 inches of the tile anyway really?

Oh not familiar with that but that is so cool that you can create it the way you want to.

Before you decide on the plain tile, do this, I just googled "iridescent tile pool waterline" and click on Images. It may not be as fancy/blingy as you fear when just on the waterline.

I went with the more classic look... didn’t want to go trendy ... our home is pretty modest and I just feel the regular glass tile will be best... our contractor agreed and also thought it would be best with the surface color we chose... so below are is the tile and paver coping we chose and the water will have sky blues flecks and cobalt blue glass beads! I will post the finished product! Thank you!

Just wanted to show the iridescent tile in a large scale install so you can see whether or not it is too bling for you. We thought that about this iridescent tile in the same manner when designing this pool and rain wall... It turned out great!

So first pic is beginning of demo... next 3 are the new paver coping and tile.. went against iridescent!! Project turning out more beautiful than I expected!!! Thank you all for you input! The contractor chose “bone” for the grout...looks like sea glass and sand!!! Will send more as it progresses...

So it’s done all except the finishers paver deck.. to be installed within the month.. these pics aren’t the best .. once it’s completely fished I will post another pic... love the colors turned out very nice! Thank you all again.. i was glad I went against iridescent since this gave me a sea glass and sand look...

Soooo.. after about 24 hours of being complete... I noticed some major sloppy workmanship!
1. Can see the bond coat through the bottom row of tile,
2. White pool finish all over the tan grout
3. Step marker tile scratched to hell
4. Pool is leaking!!!!!!!!!
5. They left our Lanai a complete mess that
6. Areas that were cut out not filled in enough and can see major indent near water return line....
FYI took my husband 4 hours to clean up the lanai!
They are coming back tomorrow to fix a few of the issues but some they don’t even know about yet... I don’t even know how to handle this ?!!! I should not be paying full price .. one or 2 things okay... but 5?!!

Well, I feel your frustration having just gone through a whole house Harvey remodel during the last 18 months..I'm pi$$ed off every single day I look at workmanship in certain areas of the house,.

It is incredibly frustrating when you've spent that kind of money and see the lack of integrity. And now it's just going to be more mess trying to correct those things. I'm sorry Nicole, I know it's sooo disappointing. I can't believe the pool is leaking too!!

Good luck tomorrow confronting them with all the issues. Hopefully they'll address it all asap!

Thanks Jac! I am just not sure what’s expecting too much out of them ... so very sorry this also happened to you ! I think I am just going to say “fix it all” ... I maybe wouldn’t have if it were just a few minor things ... but I think I just want it all fixed... thank you!!

It’s hard to take good pics but after weeks of frustration.. it’s finally done... AGAIN! Still some blemishes but nothing compared to the initial refinish.. we had them upgrade to a finish called Oasis Select by FL stucco ... it’s filled with cobalt blue glass beads and it’s really beautiful!!

Can’t really tell the differences from the first refinish to the second from the pics but in person the differences are obvious!

It’s took me coming down pretty hard in them .. I think they guy was freaked I was about to withhold payment and sue him...

Don’t know if you need any new outdoor pillows but I picked these and the rug up at Target and they would look great with your tile colors. Pillows are a little big for my sofa but I don’t care, I love them anyway.
