Do you mean people are peeing while they are already in there taking a shower, or actually just getting into a dry shower to pee down the drain?

The first is not all that horrifying to me. I've done it. Many times. You're already in there, the water is running, pee is pretty sterile and I'm washing everything up anyway.

However as a woman, the second choice involves way too much work for me. ;)

Its a little gross since the trap under the shower will trap some of the urine, and the shower water will make it steadily more dilute, there will still be some there.

In any case it's much less gross than the opposite of washing up in the toilet bowl. :-)

A former internist of mine -- excellent doctor -- suggested peeing on your toenails when showering to kill fungus. Why not? Toilet or shower, it is being flushed down the drain and is far from your head (mouth, nose).

There's no such thing as more sterile or less sterile. There's sterile and not sterile. My understanding is that urine is not sterile.

When you turn on the shower and rinse off, or even rinse off after soaping, there's likely to be more bacteria on the shower floor and running down the drain than there would be from urine. Included in the witch's brew from rinsing are likely to be such terrors as E. coli and C. diff. These stay to some extent in your trap and piping and join many other types of bacteria that live and thrive there.

If you ever need to snake or plunge a drain, wear gloves and be sure to wash off any upflow and splash thoroughly.

For females (while otherwise all wet, anyway) shouldn't be too serious risk of contamination (with the proviso above that pee is sterile, so less contaminated that tap/shower water) if spreading legs and flexing knees - but remember that this advice being offered is mostly theoretical.

Somewhat less problematic for males, especially if they choose to move their body slightly back from the centre of the action.

In the light of the reference above to some remaining diluted in the drain trap ... good idea for females and males equally to take such action early in the shower session.

Also, again as referred to above, while the proportion of the liquid that's pee in the pool is way lower ... it does contact almost the whole of your body.

I pretty much agree with Gardengal and George Castanza. Holding urine in is bad for your kidneys (according to my urologist), but like Kramer, I take baths instead of showers. I have to think that worse things come off of your body than urine while taking a shower, however.

My brother and I have separate bathrooms, and so no one else uses our bathrooms, although Kevin's bathroom doubles as a guest bathroom, since it is off a hall whereas as mine is on-suite.

I guess I am not surprising anyone... if I proclaim, yes, I do pee in the shower. All goes down the same drain in the end anyway. :)

There is a difference to me on whether one is urinating in a stand alone shower with a large drain or in a tub/shower where the water drains more slowly or even backs up.

Off topic but I love hotels with shower only units rather than those slow draining tub showers. If I must take a room with a tub shower it's the first thing I check and it it has a slow drain I request another room and tell them why. Nasty standing up to your ankles in bath water that won't drain.

If your tub/shower drains slowly or backs up when taking a shower, some section of the drain line (often the trap but sometimes down river from there) is clogged. Water should run directly down.

The shower is the best place for women to learn how to pee standing up. It's a great skill that can come in handy when you're stuck going in a less than appealing location as some outhouses.

I can admit it was something done when I lived alone, think it started mostly by accident I was already in, WET and SUDDENLY HAD TO GO. It lost its appeal when I thought of sharing a shower with someone else who was peeing too. What I wanted to say is for me it was a very TOUGH transition back to not peeing when showering. Once my body was in the habit it just sort of did its own thing. Perhaps some find it more objectionable due to the lack of water they intake? If my urine were highly concentrated and odorific I might never have started.

I don't see a problem with peeing while taking a shower. You're washing stuff off your body and the urine is washed immediately and goes directly down, so what's the big yuck factor?

So if the warm water washing down does trigger the need to pee does that mean those of you who are squeamish actually interrupt the shower to use the toilet, dripping wet and maybe soapy and then drip and slither your way back to the shower? All to avoid urine in the drain that shares the same line as the toilet?

I'm really missing something. I will certainly admit I pee in the shower.

The showerhead is going, I'm soaping, I use the hand-held shower to rinse myself thoroughly, I don't know why anyone "wouldn't" pee if they had to.

I don't stand in any water at all in the tub, mine flows just fine. I also use a cheap dollar-store screen/trap that catches hair etc, which I clean out after every shower, so no hair or objects go down the drain to slow it down.

Our toilets go to the septic tank. Our tubs and showers go to a gray water drain field. So no, we don’t pee in the shower.

I looked it up and you're right about size - 1.5 inch diameter pipe is code for a tub, 2 inches for a shower. But I'm going to tell you, in my experience that doesn't matter. I had one of each that needed to be snaked in the last 6 weeks. Perhaps backwards from what you expect, the tub has a 30 year old shower head that predates flow restriction limits (I know because I bought it and installed it back then) and the shower has a brand new shower head with the new California flow standard. The tub with the unrestricted head now flows directly to the drain and goes down, no backup. Same with shower but with much less flow.

As I said before, if your tub drain is backing up when showering, it's very likely there's a partial clog that needs to be cleaned out.

California has enacted the nation's most restrictive rules for flow restrictions for plumbing fixtures and showerheads. The energy and water savings of these measures are staggeringly huge. Perhaps like so many other things, the rest of the nation will follow California's lead in coming years.

Ew. Pee steam. I'll pass. I always pee right before getting in the shower. Just like I go right before leaving the house. It's a habit I guess.

Sometimes it does not matter if you have just peed before getting into the shower especially if you take certain types of medicine. I too visualized because I used to do it the scramble out of the shower, slipping and sliding to the stool. Then the question was do I mop the floor right then or after I shower and step out onto the slippery floor. Safety became a major factor. Luckily I no longer take that medicine but if need be I would chose safety again over the uck factor.
