Comments (5)Ah, time for the annual bashing of Pristene. Beautiful blooms. Stunning. For the one day that they last. If they last a day. I have left the house with a Pristene in bud (sepals down) and have it fully open, stamens showing, by the time I get home. Was also a one-caned wonder for many years, but has grown a couple of large canes from the base of the one and is now intruding upon Lagerfeld's space. Beautiful thing, if just for a fleeting moment. Too far back in the bed to remove. Sigh....See MoreHow many of you cheat, like me?
Comments (15)I'm not throwing any rocks, Hortster, and I'm sure you are not alone in using purchased products to accelerate decomp in your compost. However, it's not something many of us want to talk about after having someone jump on us for employing gardening/composting practices that may be different than what they do. IMO there is nothing wrong with using compost accelerators altho I don't use granular urea because I try to be as organic as possible. I welcome donations of the organic variety. :-) In this zone 3 climate composting really only happens for 5-6 months despite some people saying otherwise. When it's -40C (that's -40F also) keeping a compost hot is something I invite anyone to come and try! I'll provide the hot chocolate and cozy indoor fire you can enjoy when that pick-axe gets too heavy and you've decided you're cold enough! ;-D Also we live in the boonies and it's not always possible to find enough components to compost hot - it means driving miles to find things which isn't ecological or easy. We're retired and sometimes also tired so aren't going to expend the effort in that direction. Have to pick and choose activities. As for using horse or cattle manure, sure there's lots of it around but haven't found anyone to deliver reliably. Most ranchers and horse people here are too busy and have their animals on pasture much of the year. No feedlots here. Those who have manure available expect you to bring your pickup and they'll toss in a bucket load with their front end loader. Since we have a new pickup we don't want to do that. Much easier to buy bags of alfalfa pellets to make tea and add to the compost. Just bot 120kg which should last awhile. Cost $60 which is less than many people spend on fertilizers. I've used blood meal and soya meal in the past but prefer alfalfa pellets. Don't want to attract predators with the blood meal and I don't like GM products much. The alfalfa we're getting is not GM yet. I picked up about 30lbs of UCG today at a local coffee shop so I do what I can when it works for me. My project this week is to pile up the remnants of my failed lasagna bed along with all the weeds and grass clippings, water it with some alfalfa tea, and cover with a black tarp. No more fooling around trying to keep the compost pile damp enough in this dry windy climate. If I lived on a 60'x100' city lot I could easily make enough compost by 'approved' methods but not here for this large country garden. I depend on 'feeding' the worms in my garden as well - they love alfalfa tea and my buried kitchen scraps. In turn they are making lots of worm castings which I understand some people actually buy! I think we all need to remember that there are many ways of improving soil and composting and not everyone has the same conditions to garden in. Making even small attempts at composting are commendable and deserving of encouragement, not criticism....See MoreHow many roses do you have?
Comments (123)Ah, gee, thanks, Helen. I was fixing to offer to drive up to Dallas and take Poseidon off Ben's hands when you had to go and talk him into *keeping* that one. ;-) I'm guessing that I have in the range of 40 or so, but who has time to count? (I know, I know... It's not like it's a big number, but still... Honestly, when I think of the poor neglected ones in the pot-ghetto-zone which is in part shade where I don't need to water them *every* day, many of which are growing backwards as a consequence...) I feel like an Imelda, having shoes that will never get worn, I fear... Are you guys mostly retired, or just *way* better at time management than I am? (Gardening isn't "work" for me per se, but I think I spend way too much of my "gardening" time just looking, admiring, and daydreaming and not actually accomplishing much.)...See MoreHow many of you WISH you had more sun?
Comments (31)Nights are going to be really cold this week - into the 30's. Anyone who lives in northern states should bring their citrus inside for the winter (if you haven't yet). Provide good lighting, humidity and warmth. Meyer Lemons can take some cold temperatures, but only for a short time. They stop growing and thriving below temps of 50-55F. Good thing to keep in mind. I ordered a temp/humidity meter on Amazon to monitor the air around my tree. If I have extra money next month I might pick up a soil temperature meter to make sure the root zone is warm enough - although I think that is a bit nitpicking, but there is nothing I won't do or buy for my tree friend. I will post pics pics of the 10 lemons on my tree when they start to turn yellow. Hopefully next month. Then again when they are the beautiful gold/yellow color and ripe. Also, I will be taking cuttings today or tomorrow. I have to because the new growth is growing right up to the grow light and will get burnt if I don't remove them. Fingers crossed. I will be very pleased if I can clone my tree instead of buying another citrus from Logees or Four Winds Nursery....See MoreUser
