Wood look tiles and hardwood floors

We have a small room that was added on to the back of the original house which we use as a family room. It is a heavy traffic area and id like to replace the carpet with woodlook ceramic tiles. The entire main floor of the original house has hardwood floors. I’ve read not to mix real wood with wood looks, but I really want to maintain a warm feeling. Since the room is pretty much separated From the main Floor, with only A 32” doorway, does the no mix rule apply?

I wouldn’t put wood-look-tile next to real wood.

There is another current thread on Houzz about the durability of wood look tiles. Read through it before making any permanent decisions.

I purchased from Huron Hardwood. I had a very pleasant experience and am thrilled with the wood (4 inch white oak planks). We had a lot of wood left over because we had almost no waste. One of the things I liked about it is the fact that everytime I called I talked to the same person. The President of the company. Very seldom did I get a voice mail when I called. After I purchased, I had questions (a lot of them), and he treated me as well after he had my money as he did before. The only bad part was the delivery - which was not their fault. The delivery is via a semi-trailer truck, which couldn't get up our driveway. And something you should also be aware of is that there is a 3% upcharge if you pay with VISA/Mastercard, which must be through PayPal. The alternative is bank draft or check.

I too am considering wood looking tile. We are finishing our basement (dry) and had decided on Pergo Max Premier (12mm) as I hate the clicking when walking on it. Now I'm having 2nd thoughts. I'm just now checking into the wood tile and would like to hear from anyone familiar with that product.

Thanks everyone for your help. My dog is a west highland white terrier, so the scratches are not even just surface scratches. She has run over the same places so many times that there are large slivers of wood missing now. I should have specified that the tile I'm looking at is vinyl. It looks like wood and it even feels like wood. No grout as it snaps together. It's about $5 a sq ft for the one I've chosen (that's Cdn $$). I would definitely redo the hardwood if someone could guarantee a finish that wouldn't scratch, but it doesn't exist (at least not with my dog!). You know the cartoons where the dog runs and runs in one spot before taking off like a bullet? That's my Sophie. Eat my dust (and my wood splinters!). I don't mind the cold at all and I hear the vinyl isn't too bad. I just hope it doesn't scratch!!!

No faux wood next to real wood. It never looks right. Either use the same wood, or put in a stone look.

How old is the addition? Is it a plywood or concrete subfloor under the carpet? What area do you live in (cold northern or HOT southern)?

The design rule of thumb is: if the floors are TOUCHING or are visible to on another (like through a 32" doorway/breeze way) then you do not want 'fake wood-look' product next to the real thing.

People have done it...some have managed it (because they have a great eye for design) but most muddle it up.

I like to see a travertine-look tile in complimentary colours (to the hardwood) used instead of wood-look tile when the floors are this close to one another. The porcelain travertine-look tiles come in EVERY colour in the rainbow (yes...I've seen purple). The striations in the travertine-look tiles is what keeps the THEME of the hardwood going without being a 'fake' look up against the real thing.

When fake is next to or visible while standing on the real thing, it makes BOTH materials look cheap(er) and fake(r). That's the main reason behind the "do not mix" concept.

Go ahead and google travertine porcelain tiles. You will be AMAZED at what you can have without dealing with 'fake' vs. 'natural' in your home.

I’m guessing the addition was built in the early 1950’s. It was built as a Sunporch or 3 season room. We added a gas stove fireplace so We could use it year round. It has A raised foundation with concrete floor, and is a step down from the original back entry of the house. under the carpet is slate tiles that i don’t care for. I live in southeastern Michigan. My thought was to install heating under the new ceramic.

LOL. I was going to suggest slate or slate look ceramic/porcelain since I'm not a fan of meeting real and fake wood.
