Ideas please -- Upstairs is too hot in Cape Cod style home
Comments (8)upstairs rooms that have walls that are shared with attic space are always difficult to condition. hot in summer...but in winter heat from downstairs makes it easier to heat. in my experience it is the walls themselves that are the cuplrit...not lack of hvac. attic temps are extreme. in the summer the attic temps can pass 130 degrees. R-13 batts in walls just doesn't stop the heat transfer. you can throw more money in hvac at the area...but it will be at a preminum cost, both in equipment and costs to operate. fixing the walls is a one time cost. then conditioning the space is achievable. walls shared with attic should be insulated. usually batts stapled in place, in full contact with wall, and no gaps or voids. then a foil faced foam sheathing board, nailed to the faces of the studs. foil faces into attic space to reflect heat out of walls. install is with button cap or roofing nails. sheathing is caulked to studs, top and bottom plates & all seams are taped. this install both insulates and air seals these problem walls. do a site search of FROGs family room over garage...to see that these are common problems with rooms that share attic space. southface inst has great detail in their air sealing pdf linked below...page 5 http://www.southface.org/default-interior/Documents/airsealingkeypoints.pdf best of luck....See Moretable for casual dining space - size? style?
Comments (10)I'm definitely interested in having a leaf - but can I do 54" with a leaf, maximizing my space on a daily basis? Putting the leaf in seems like a pain to me so I can see us being reluctant to do it often, but maybe I just need to get over that. I don't think a rectangular table is our best option. We have that now and chairs on the ends of the 10' width of the room are tight (using our current 60" table) We can just fit 2 seats on that 60" length so I don't see going any smaller for a rectangle. I'm not opposed to built in seating in general, but I don't think it works well for our space. I feel like the room would look very off-balance in the one corner we could do this. it's frustrating to go through a big renovation and still have a small room! but expaning the footprint of the house was not an option at this time...See MoreDAT #4- Beach House Style
Comments (47)Palimpset, it's funny that you say it looks accumulated as I worried that it was too matchy-matchy because of all the rattan. I think my propensity towards that approach is based on watching Sarah Richardson putting a room together. Cawaps, there's definitely a lot going on in the room, but I did try and limit the forms to organic shapes and the colors to the color palette from the sofa fabric. It really was about finding a fabric that included both the deep red of the fixture and the orange of the carpet. It would definitely not be a restful living room, but I think would be great for parties. The fabric is from here: http://www.fabricguru.com/p-fabric-by-the-yard/terrace-printed-polyester-outdoor-atlantis-1 and it comes in a couple of other color ways. It's an outdoor fabric so it should be fairly kid-friendly. Positively Patty, The wall color reads to me as a little green, I wonder if a paler version of the pale cream in the carpet would be more restful? Crl, finding the sofa fabric was definitely key. I like the balance between organic curves and linearity in your room....See MoreLampshade Style Light Fixture Too Casual for Entryway?
Comments (13)Moravian Star semi flush light fixture @Gen The star in your front door glass caught my attention. I agree with the suggstions for a semi flush light for your 9’ ceilings as that’s what I have & I like the look. I wondered about a Moravian Star fixture to play up the star in your glass. the link above is to images of them on Google - so many & so pretty!...See Morewaverly6
