What’s next on our home exterior?

We’ve done a lot to the yard. Gave the flower beds a shot but Indian Hawthorne and camellias aren’t taking off as well as expected. Third photo is so you can see the driveway/carport area. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do right now with the terrible driveway.

Please note that the roof in the first photo has been replaced with a dark brown metal roof (see second photo). I was previously mentioned that we should paint our white siding a charcoal color but I don’t think it would look right with the new brown roof.

2nd photo is the most up to date of the house.

You have an awesome mid century modern home. I would try to embrace some of the elements like the after picture of the home I found where the siding and facia where replaced with cedar the the brick stained gray.

Your first photograph is good. If you could please supply two more pictures taken from that same spot. Look to the left and take a picture. Then look to the right and take a picture.

In the mean time I have a few thoughts. The house is good so I don't seem problems there.

There is an awkward space in front of the stoop on the drive. It would be better to enlarge that area to enhance the look of the entrance.

The current planting bed is much too shallow. Five feet is the minimum depth for an attractive bed that does not make the house look smothered with plants.

Your house is so nice it does not need anything complicated with the plantings. If you dislike gardening you could leave it very simple with just a few varieties of plants.

IMO you currently have no way for a visitor to distinguish where the entry is. The large sea of paving created by the drive and turn around or parking spaces vs. the narrow entry tucked between the two building wings gives no clear message of where a visior should enter. The narrow path and archway to the courtyard says to me that it is private space, akin to walking into someone’s back yard uninvited. I would likely follow the drive around the house if I were looking for the front door, assuming that the house was spun 90 degrees with the entry facing right. Bryan Lovely’s second drawing solves this with problem with a clear pathway from the driveway to the entrance, an entry patio, and bright plantings that bring attention to the home entry. While his planting layout doesn’t do much for me, and I think the path should be wider, at least 6’ wide, this general scheme will improve the front entry and make the house far more welcoming than its current front facade. Tiny changes like window trim don’t solve the largest issue of how a first time visitor find the entrance to a home that presents a barricaded appearance.

Update: We painted the gutters and soffits Benjamin Moore Dragon's Breath and the columns and windows the same color, but desaturated. Changed out the lights, updated furniture, removed shutters and added horizontal fence/gate. We ripped up the hedges in our beds and planted birds of paradise, gingers, a banana tree and vincas. Over time they will fill nicely. Our beautiful oak tree's roots are right below the walkway, and we decided it wasn't wise to mess with it. The week we finished, our dream home down the block went up for sale, and we made an offer. Thankfully since we have invested so much time and love into our home (with a lot of guidance from Houzz) and it sold within 24 hours. So we passed the "finish line" for our current home, and will thankfully we able to admire her beauty when walking the neighborhood. Thanks everyone for your input, and I hope the pictures help others looking to update a side century ranch home!

Why light windows? With the Georgian style of the home in a historic area of greater Philadelphia, sticking with a more traditional look feels right to me, plus I like traditional. Additionally, dark windows on a house like this feels trendy to me, and with all the other renovations we want to do, I don't want to redo the windows until we have to. Lastly, I think dark windows look best without shutters and for the proportions of the house (as well as the architecture) I think the house needs shutters. My husband and I agree dark windows would look killer in the back but not in the front. I really do like the idea of green accents or shutters. There's a house in the neighborhood that I always admire with sage trim and no shutters but their brick and window layout is different than ours. And like I said, I think we'd have to get the color just right for it not to be just a green version of what we have now.

@chestnut3 I use cork liners in the pots and pan drawers, under utensil and silverware trays, and on the floor of the tray cabinet. Since my trays do not cover the entire width and depth of the drawer space, overflow of utensils are placed directly on the cork in those voids. I have washable liners for all the other drawers and shelves in the kitchen. I unfortunately acquired an oil stain on one of the cork liner in a pots and pan drawer, but it doesn't bother me. I'd rather have a stain on the cork than on the cabinet. I like that cork prevents sliding, doesn't shift, deadens sound and protects the cabinets from stains and wear.

If you want to change the color scheme, paint trim, not the brick. Painted brick is not appropriate to the style and age of the home and may hinder resale value.

What emmarene said about landscaping: deeper beds front to back, simple set of plants, and modify the area around the steps. I would make the landing at the base of the steps rectangular and at least as wide as the steps instead of that tiny crescent. Remove the beds along the landing and just have them across the front of the house, at least 6-8’ front to back. Plant them so that at maturity the shrubs won’t touch the house. This will look sparse initially, so add large annuals for the first few years.

I am not fond of the driveway to the house look that often is due to a garage conversion. If possible, stop the driveway further back and either remove concrete to make a bed and plant across the front, or somehow make this a convincing seating area. Adding the photos requested to the left and right of the first photo may help with more useful suggestions for this area.
