Junction box for wall light with small 3 inch high backplate

I am trying to install an old-work junction box for a new powder room wall light in an old house. Currently, there are just two wires coming from the wall.

The backplate of the chosen new fixture is 6 inches wide and 3 inches high, which means the standard round junction box, 4.5 inches in diameter, would be visible behind the backplate.

Would this junction box with ear mounting work - 3.625 high by 2.375 wide - if I placed it on its side? Will the ear mounting cause difficulty with installing the fixture backplate? And can you substitute a rectangular box for the typical round wall junction box?

I found another rectangular box that used flippers inside the wall to hold it in, but when the box is turned sideways, one of the two flippers isn't going to work because of a stud that is smack in the center of the wall.

I would appreciate any advice you can give.
