how often do you replace flourescent bulbs?
Comments (5)I toss them when they start flickering or burn out. Even at 16 hours a day 365 days a year that's over 5 years if they've got 30,000 hours on them. Granted my fixtures are overdriven but I can use bulbs that don't work anymore in regular fixtures. The extra power will fire the gases when N.O.fixtures won't. Fluorescents only lose 5% of their efficiency over the first year and only up to 10% in their life time AFAIK....See MoreAnyone have Lowe's undercab flourescent lights?
Comments (5)I did my share of research and found a company that offered a lot of options, including your choice of bulbs. The prices were more reasonable. My questions were answered directly by the owner of the company. I just had them installed and I am very happy with my selection. Because they are very slim, they cannot simply be hardwired into the wall switch and wiring. You need to purchase the box and the connecting wire. You will see what I mean on the website. The metal boxes are not as wide, but are taller, so if you have a cabinet rail that are sized to hide the fixture, these boxes will not do. I ended up getting the boxes with the individual switches (which I really didn't need since all of the lights are switched by the same wall switch) but these boxes are no taller than the slim fixtures. Just the same, in the last few days, I did take advantage of the individual switches by using one smaller light as a kitchen night light. I ended up ordering the 12" connecting wires since the 6 inch wires do not give much leeway for installations. Also, the units will connect to each other. I saved money by buying two 13" units to make a 26" one which was fine enough for my needs rather than buying a single larger one. All in all, I feel that I received quality products without the need to deal with proprietary bulbs down the line. You can also choose from bulb temperatures (K) that suits your needs and likes. I saved on taxes but did pay shipping- which was reasonable. For two of the packages that I ordered, they arrived the next day (in NYC area) even though the order was shipped from the company in FL. I don't know how it came so fast, but they obviously did not sit on the orders. Finally, I needed to order the wires (which I forgot the first time) and although UPS said the package was delivered, I never saw it. UPS was supposed to investigate and call me, but never did. When I called Brodwax to follow up, the owner decided to resolve the issue at his own expense. I have no pecuniary interests in the company. I did the Home Depot and Lowe's route too. I just wanted to share my results, in case they would be meaningful to others. Good luck in your research. Comments (10)ironcook, you mentioned tubes, were they the traditional tubes or the curly compact kind? I think the last group of CFL's I bought were from Costco. I'll need to check out the big boxes to see what they're carrying now. Good point about glass fixtures. Mine are a heavy beveled glass. They're 70's vintage. I think the bevels obscure the CFL. Trees21, I'll need to check out the options on those electronic ballasts. I bought recessed lights a couple of years ago when Expo went out of business. I was planning to use those, but if the new electronic ballast types aren't too expensive I could possibly CL the halo lights I bought. Can't do much about the vintage fixtures though. I've got my heart set on those... I think I might use one of those 40% off coupons and give the Ott Lite bulb a try. I'll put it in a lamp that way I can take it into the kitchen and see how it will look. I admit I haven't done much crafting or knitting lately, but when this kitchen is finally done, I could definitely use this light for that in the future. Florantha, I'm curious about SAD. DH thinks he suffers from it, but he was a Psychology major, so take that with a grain of salt. I'll have to see if I can research this a bit. That would be great if it helps....See MorePegasus or WAC Undercab Flourescent Lighting?
Comments (6)Juliet3: I have a very small galley kitchen and have only four of the 13" light bars, which are 8 watts each. This provides plenty of task lighting/ambiance lighting for my situation -- yours may be very different, depending on the size of your kitchen and the width of your cabinets. I wouldn't necessarily look at the wattage, but the width of your upper cabinets and put the widest fixture available under those cabinets. However, in my narrow galley, I wanted the light to be even on both sides of the kitchen, so I went with the biggest fixture that fit under the smallest upper I was installing it under, and used that size under each of those upper cabinets, if that makes sense. (If you don't have a galley kitchen, then this wouldn't apply to you.) HTH. Here is a link that might be useful: WAC fluorescent light bars...See Moresusanlynn2012
