Thanks michaelg. Hmm. We did not get that low a low though we did have some frost warnings for tender plants on several overnights, I thought. Some of the bare roots were certainly healthier than others, though a couple that I thought had what appeared to be more cane damage than others seem to be doing better now. The tips do have/had a browning, like the last most tip of leaf growth died. I can't say the growth looked wilted though. I thought I was watering sufficiently and our rainfall was pretty good. Maybe it was insect damage. I think I will try and take some pictures and post here later on. I will leave them as is and not trim back any of the leaves. Hopefully they are working on deep roots.

I don't think is too late if you pamper them a bit. But the question is if you want to order from them or not. I ordered two OLOG tree roses from them back in early may. They arrived covered in fungus. They send me only one replacement which was frankly in worse shape than the original two. I called again, they send me another one, which the cranker was passed the grafts. Not to mention mildew. I called again. They are not offering refund since they still have roses they can replace this with. But what is the use of sending rose when they are in worst shape than the first. Sorry if I soured your plans. Just wanted you to be aware of the gamble. FJ FJ

Peppermint Splash was a test rose from last year (spring 2008 test panel), and I have been growing it since then. I much prefer Rock & Roll -- Peppermint Splash has kind of a weird habit so far -- lots of enormous green growth, but really small flowers in small sprays. I'm hoping it will grow out of this weird habit, but so far, no. That said, Peppermint Splash is a very different rose from any other stripe in my yard (and I have lots of them). Rock & Roll is red and white (think Fourth of July with more petals). Peppermint Splash is actually a good name for the J & P rose because it does have a "colors splashed over white" look to it -- speckles of color in more or less the arrangement of a stripe. And lots of colors in the speckles -- mostly dark pink, but also some shades of other colors like red, orange and yellow, all of which are phototropic and turn darker and more pink with exposure to sunshine (Double delight is the most famous phototropic rose -- colors changing as the plant opens and depending on how much sun is avaiable as they open). Peppermint Splash is not really solid stripes of two colors like Rock & Roll. If you want organized stripes, go with Rock & Roll. If you want what looks like a party on a rose, go with Peppermint Splash (and hope for the better habit at some point, like I am). Ultimately, on a fully mature Peppermint Splash open bloom, the colors are dark pink and white. Oh yes, I should also say Peppermint Splash is a more vigorous plant than Rock & Roll. It wants to be big. I'm not sure how big yet, but it is only a year old and it clearly is not content in its 10 gal pot at the moment. Rock & Roll is content to be 5 feet tall here in Calif. Both have good disease resistance here in mildew heaven. Never had a problem on that with either one. Kathy

Very sorry this happened to you , braverichard. I read over J&P warranty, I did not see anything being required to buy in within their stated hardiness zone for the guarantee to remain in tact. If that's their policy, they should state it, and be prepared lose most of their tree rose sales to those not in zone 7-10. I also notice that good customer service companies have some form of escalation for valid reasons that fall outside of their warranty...I recently received refunds from both Amazon and Uber for situations that fell outside their warranty, because they made sense. Wayside, J&P and esp Park seed brought me much happiness when I was a kid. It's sad to see them in decline, their offerings are not that competitive in today's world, their reviews are bad, I would guess they're not exactly profitable, either.
