I was just looking at them this afternoon. I really like Sedona. And I am wondering what the difference might be between Peppermint Splash and the Rock n Roll I bought earlier this year. IT is hard to think of an improvement on that! I went to the site because I needed another Moondance but it is not listed...where did it go? It won all those awards and everyone seems to like it. Mine died when I moved it last winter.

J&P will introduce a Rose, then pull it from commerce without any warning sometimes.
It's strictly a numbers game with them.
The real bummer is they will sometimes prevent others from propogating their introductions.
Perhaps it'll show up in the Spring offerings, which will be published this Fall.

I've already decided to order Sedona for spring planting. I think I will really like it.

I never can understand how J&P decides what to offer in any given year. Seems like they only offer what really sold well in its introductory year, then they disappear from their catalog if they aren't "popular".

I have to admit that most of my roses came from J&P. I have bought very few at local nurseries or any other mail-order company. I had no idea there were so many other (better) places to buy roses, until I joined GardenWeb and found HMF. Now that I see what else is available, J&P's selection seems rather sparse.

Great just what I need more J&P roses .... I would trade anything in my collection for another Yellow Habitat for Humanity but it was a promo rose only offered 1 year. It loved Florida got to be a great climber ...did not like the heavy fertilizer I gave it by accident ...sigh

lizalily, I have seen Moondance listed at several online nurseries, including Roses Unlimited, which is having a sale right now! and also K&M Roses (which are grafted on fortuniana). I bought another one earlier this year at the nursery.....I think it was from Week's. It's out there, keep looking!

J&P makes me sick as in PUKE!

If I knew for sure that they were withholding varieties from production, I would have no qualms about propagating them myself and giving them away.

They really need to succumb to this economy.

Keith Zary once told me that J&P felt they needed to sell 10-15,000 of a variety to consider it worthwhile.
I can't remember if that was the introductory year or not.
Like I said it's all about numbers to them.
Bro Cadafel, email them and ask permission to duplicate one of their Roses and you'll likely get a stern reply telling you it's illegal.
They are not nice to do business with anymore and haven't been for quite a few years.

Peppermint Splash was a test rose from last year (spring 2008 test panel), and I have been growing it since then.

I much prefer Rock & Roll -- Peppermint Splash has kind of a weird habit so far -- lots of enormous green growth, but really small flowers in small sprays. I'm hoping it will grow out of this weird habit, but so far, no.

That said, Peppermint Splash is a very different rose from any other stripe in my yard (and I have lots of them). Rock & Roll is red and white (think Fourth of July with more petals). Peppermint Splash is actually a good name for the J & P rose because it does have a "colors splashed over white" look to it -- speckles of color in more or less the arrangement of a stripe. And lots of colors in the speckles -- mostly dark pink, but also some shades of other colors like red, orange and yellow, all of which are phototropic and turn darker and more pink with exposure to sunshine (Double delight is the most famous phototropic rose -- colors changing as the plant opens and depending on how much sun is avaiable as they open). Peppermint Splash is not really solid stripes of two colors like Rock & Roll. If you want organized stripes, go with Rock & Roll. If you want what looks like a party on a rose, go with Peppermint Splash (and hope for the better habit at some point, like I am). Ultimately, on a fully mature Peppermint Splash open bloom, the colors are dark pink and white.

Oh yes, I should also say Peppermint Splash is a more vigorous plant than Rock & Roll. It wants to be big. I'm not sure how big yet, but it is only a year old and it clearly is not content in its 10 gal pot at the moment. Rock & Roll is content to be 5 feet tall here in Calif.

Both have good disease resistance here in mildew heaven. Never had a problem on that with either one.

After my buying spree, which just ended with 4 Ashdowns, I was thinking I am not getting anymore Austins. Well, now most of my Austins are taking off! So, my latest thought was I am not buying anymore "new" roses for 2010. The 2002-2009s (AARS winners!) are limping along. I was already picking out which new J&Ps I wanted, 'cause they are sooo pretty! So next week......who know where I will be? LOL Fickle newbie rose lady that I am!

Lynn, thanks for the heads up on Roses Unlimited. JUst came up with a list of 10 roses I have wanted for a long time and sent it off to see what they have available! And Decobug, thanks for the link...I checked under their list of white roses and did not find it! Would rather have my roses NOT on Dr Huey if possible.

I believe their 'container' roses that are available in 6" pots this fall are own root roses...

lookin4you2xist, did you ask me for a cutting of 'Habitat for Humanity' about three or four years ago?
