Sorry you are unhappy and you are free to form and state your own opinion. However, I don't think it is fair to the business to tell others to stay away (in your post title). I tell you this also for your own protection. There have been successful lawsuits over this sort of thing when the business can prove that a customer's defamatory statements have hurt thier business. There are gardenweb members that have reported good experiences with Jackson & Perkins. It is nice to hear that you will support other nurseries. Best wishes to you.

stay away with a gun to their head, it is your money, do with it as you wish, but this

Thanks Cynthia because until now, I've always gotten great service from them and several of their roses have survived years for me, I own 3 of their Pope John Paul II tree roses for instance.

That stinks. Photoshopped pics too! This should be illegal. So many mail-order companies seem to do that now. I tend to look for photos on line from gardeners instead.

I have three roses on order with them. 2 Kordes "Kiss Me Kate" and one K "Bliss". They're own root so maybe it will be okay? They're also being planted infall which is probably not the best idea. Maybe I should cancel and see if RU, Northland or some other own root rose dealer will have these available for spring.

Richard that is so so crummy of them ! They should refund for that for sure . They did not break dormancy and I agree that is the real issue not a tough winter . I think we all have nurserys that we are so over . It's a shame because they get limited but how many chances should you give or how much money should you waste ?

Wonder if you can go higher up in the chain of command to get your refunds.

Lilyfinch- thanks. I've ordered from RU several times and have always been pleased with my roses. She has some other roses on my list so I'll just add to the never ending list.

I'll try to cancel the J &P order. since the roses won't be shipping until after Labor Day.

Lily, crummy is not a joke, terrible of J&P! Yeah, I understand the perspective that we have only so many places to buy our beloved roses from and so we have a vested interest in keeping them in business, but it is a mutually beneficial arrangement and we have to be treated properly. What I just got from J&P was not proper IMO.

IMO, any rose supplier that now falls under the heading of "restructured after bankruptcy" isn't likely to meet the standards of their original incarnation. What passes as J&P in 2017 is owned by a conglomerate called Western Capital Resources. That is sufficient information to persuade me to buy elsewhere.

PS: Jackson & Perkins currently has a one star rating on Yelp, mainly due to the 2017 ratings, which are abysmal.

J&P isn't known for high quality bare roots. So if anyone orders their bare roots really late in the season because of the cheap sale, prepare yourself mentally that some of your bare roots won't break dormancy.

I ordered 4 David Austin roses from Wayside Gardens late in the season, they arrived with mold on the canes. After a lot of TLC, 1 didn't break dormancy ===> 25% lost which is not bad for $14 per Austin rose. So, as long as you know the pros and cons of ordering cheap bare root roses late in the season, you'll be ok. Else, you should skip the cheap sale and save yourself the frustration :) Helen

I agree Helen, which is why I've stopped indulging in the late season sales entirely from J&P. The only sales I take advantage of is the kind of "buy 3 get 1 free" sales they put out periodically in winter. All of the roses I got from them this spring were ordered by February, but being in a cold zone we still get substandard stock from them because it has sat around in their cold storage from the time they start shipping to warmer zones. At least I suspect this and I have no evidence to the contrary - it's not like anyone at J&P communicates very effectively about their practices (hence Richard's and my frustrations with their decisions).

This spring I found that virtually all their roses broke dormancy (so better than last year), but they were no better than any other year at avoiding cankering to death over the first couple of weeks after planting. Given their rigidity in applying their refund policies, I no longer give J&P roses a grace period to recover from being pruned back to the ground with canker like I do for more responsive companies.

All the more reason to look forward to the opening of the Palatine rose season, where you get exquisitely cared for and huge bare root canes with knowledgeable service from people who truly understand and love roses. More reasonable prices too, which boggles my mind because they have only a few employees. I always buy any roses I want at Palatine or the more reputable companies first, and only move to places like J&P for the roses they won't release anywhere else. Might not do even that if the roses from this spring don't thrive, but time will tell.

Routine fall planting of anything except hyper-hardy plants is for USDA 6 and warmer.

J&P, Wayside Gardens, and Park Seed are all owned by the same company, and their mailing address is the same, too. I am baffled as to how the bankruptcy worked out this way, and find it really odd. Diane

This is sad to hear as there are quite a few roses exclusive to J&P, especially when remembering the "old" days when they were renowned breeders and leaders in the field.Their old policy was for one year and DAustin guarantees theirs for 5!!!

Nothing wrong with no guarantee for roses bought outside their zone, sure, I accept that, but there is lots wrong with being in the rose business and failing to distinguish between failure to overwinter and failure to break dormancy from a bareroot state.

ARE only sells live, potted plants so there is no failure to break dormancy issue.

I hope u didn't take that as a criticism. I was just surprised that it was for any reason and I'm worried because Barcelona is a wimp. I just wanted to let others know this isn't an isolated policy. I'll delete the reference.

Very sorry this happened to you , braverichard. I read over J&P warranty, I did not see anything being required to buy in within their stated hardiness zone for the guarantee to remain in tact. If that's their policy, they should state it, and be prepared lose most of their tree rose sales to those not in zone 7-10. I also notice that good customer service companies have some form of escalation for valid reasons that fall outside of their warranty...I recently received refunds from both Amazon and Uber for situations that fell outside their warranty, because they made sense.

Wayside, J&P and esp Park seed brought me much happiness when I was a kid. It's sad to see them in decline, their offerings are not that competitive in today's world, their reviews are bad, I would guess they're not exactly profitable, either.

Perhaps J&P should have a warning statement not to zone push tree roses below zone 7. Most tree roses grown below that zone are annuals as per this discussion: Zone for Rose trees? However, since your rose tree didn't even experience winter, I think they should give you a chance to show that you were sold a dud rose. Can you email photographs to someone higher up in the company? You could also make a complaint to the Better Business Bureau.

Yes I am probably going to have to escalate it higher up.

I am so sorry to hear about J&PS decline. I work for Harry and David and we owned J&P from 1964 until about 2006. It was such an awesome Comany with Mike Cady at the helm. Each year at the end of bare root season all of the unsold roses went home with the employees. At one point I had 53 J&P roses. It was where I learned about roses. It makese sad.

Last summer I ordered Malibu. It refused to come out of dormacy. They replaced it, with a bit of attitude, but they did aND the new one is a winner.

Kristine that's so cool you work / worked within the same company. It is sad they have gone downhill. When I first began rose gardening ( probably in 2006 as that's when I joined GW ) I loved the catalogs and their roses. Of course black spot resistance wasn't really good back then so they didn't last long but still good memories:)

We had the test Garden on our campus and I used it as part of the Harry and David tour. Awww, the glory days. They used to pack in to plantable boxes and thousands of them came in to sell. People still ask if we will get roses. We were the go to place for years for roses. I sure miss owning a rose company , plus free roses, what a bonus. I used to think that J&P was the only rose grower. I have broadened my horizons since then and found many superior growers. Still , it was a great time when Keith Zary was in charge.
