Your bath turned out beautifully, Karen! I think the tile to the ceiling looks fantastic and may consider doing that for my rear wall shared with the shower. For what you did on your vanity wall i feel like it works because your tile ends under the top vanity. In my case the tile surround height will be higher than the vanity. This is where I feel like the transition from the two different materials will not look good.

Make sure and FIRST meet the very basic and simple instructions of the USG wallboard installation. Screw/fastener TYPE and placement. at nearly $35 per sheet the least your builder can do is install it correctly makes one wonder what else is going on looks like an expensive build/investment..

I see your point, since the marble will be the backsplash as well as the counter top. The wall material will butt right up to the marble splash.

Is the shower tile the same as the floor tile? If it is I think that I would just put in some kind of trim piece for a transition between the two surfaces. Why? Because there are already so many other patterns here, with the "rug effect" of tile in the floor, too. So maybe a white pencil trim between them? How thick will the backsplash be? The tile will certainly be thinner, so there needs to be a step-down of sorts to the wall tile. Maybe the marble fabricator can do a bullnose edge and just have it meet the tile?

Look at Karen Rose's bathroom and imagine that she has wainscotting around the tub. See why I say no? It is too much! You may not like the tile next to the marble, but it is what you are doing, so just do it.

If you have yet another tile for the shower that is similar to, but not the same line as the floor tile, then you just have too much going on.

There is not enough space for a "free standing tub" . Build in instead. Even a lovely photo..................does not mean there was enough space for one. As in........totally impossible to clean the floor around it. Free standing tubs need a room allowing them to BREATHE in the space.

Post a flat and dimensioned drawing of your bath plan with all wondow and door and fixtures noted as well.

Nancy- Thank you so much for your excellent advice. The shower tile is the same as the floor tile just in a glossy instead of matte finish. It’s a porcelain carrera but very white with light veining. We will be doing a marble pencil tile on the edges rather than bullnose. I’m thinking it will coordinate with the countertop nicely. (I hope) Youre right we are getting a bit busy. I was concerned about even doing the tile rug with the countertops I chose but I loved them so much I decided to just go for it. I hope it wasn’t a poor decision. I’ll be keeping everything else very light so I hope it will work visually.

Our plan of action at this point is to do the entire back wall in tile as Karen Rose suggesred and just wait on tiling the vanity wall until the counters are in place. This will allow us to see them in place and do the transition such as we can in a way that works best. You’re right, it’s what we’ve got going on and we’re just going to have to work with it.

Jan Moyer- Thank you for your comments. I know the space is not ideal for a freestanding tub. Believe me it was a choice i put a ton of thought into and read every forum post about them. In the end, it was what I really wanted and am ok with the additional work to clean around it. It will be an improvement over what was there before which was a deep garden tub I had to get in to clean the sides!

I agree you do not have space for freestanding tub you will need to get into it to clean now too. And that bathroom shown that you think is beautiful is a good example of a bad placement for a free standing tub. There is no way to clean that wall under the window without just about standing on your head in the tub. As for the wall around the tub use the same material as the shower walls and mixing real and fake marble is never a good idea .
