I have to disagree with jean001 a little. New potting soil (looks like yours has some perlite as well) will not compact and/or dry out such that it pulls away from the edge of the pot, and water runs right through without wetting it. Given the size of your pot, and the amount you're watering, I'd say it's been too wet. Avocados like well-drained soil, on the slightly dry side. A new tree, with few roots to absorb and transpire water, doesn't require much. As it grows and water needs increase, it can use more, but easy does it. As jean001 suggested, growing in a pot is MUCH different than in the ground. Care must be taken to maintain the correct soil moisture. There are perhaps a few avocado varieties that will produce in a container, but it would have to be a very large container. Also, you'll get few, if any, fruits, without cross-pollination. If you maintain a drier pot, and keep an eye on moisture levels further down in the mix before watering, it's possible your tree will come back. The way it's looking at the moment, I'd give it about a 30-40% chance. Also, small avocados are prone to sunburn -- don't keep it in direct sun all day. Shade it slightly, and/or paint the trunk. -Bruce

I've cut the whole top off my trees and they came back just fine. I wanted shorter branches and the stem was floppy, that's why I cut the top off. They are grafted plants but that shouldn't make a difference. Gwen and holiday. Avocados don't grow well indoors though. And hate transplants even more.

So sad. I have taken it out of direct sunlight but maybe too late. All the leaves are turning brown now. This spring is was so full you could not see the branches hardly and bloomed like crazy. We bought an organic soil for avocado but not sure it likes it. Any chance I can nurse it through winter and get new growth for spring?

Sorry for your troubles. That tree does look sad. Transplant shock is easier to prevent than to cure. There must have been some root damage. Possibly from rough handling, or maybe the roots dried out. I know that doesn't help you right now, but for next time - think of ways you could have done it better. The best thing you can do now is give it lots of water. I know we usually recommend avoiding over watering, but desperate times call for desperate measures. While it's true that habitual over watering leads to root rot, that particular fungus won't burst forth in just a day of two. So really drench it. No standing water, please, but keep the soil wet. You may also need to cut off some or all of the leaves. The plant looses water through its leaves (transpiration). When root damage cuts down the uptake of water, reducing water loss can keep it alive. Once it regains its health, new leaves will come. Some sources also recommend adding a tablespoon of sugar to the water. I can imagine that with the leaves removed there won't be much photosynthesis. Maybe a little sugar can compensate? I don't know if it will help, but it can't hurt.
