Need Help with Indoor Avocados

I need advice with two different trees. I have an avocado that I grew myself from a seed four or five years ago and still will not give fruit, maybe never will. There are actually two avocado trees in there and I'm not certain the variety. Has anyone had any luck this way without grafting from another tree?

Secondly, I purchased a cold hardy avocado tree from an online nursery and it really had a hard travel. Some of the leaves were discolored and now I am left with only two leaves. I am hoping it will pull through. Has anyone had an avocado tree come back with this much loss of leaves?

I've cut the whole top off my trees and they came back just fine.

I wanted shorter branches and the stem was floppy, that's why I cut the top off.

They are grafted plants but that shouldn't make a difference. Gwen and holiday.

Avocados don't grow well indoors though. And hate transplants even more.

Okay, thank you. I live in Denver so planting outside won't work. I have been lucky enough to have these grow pretty well but like I said no fruit. I am an amateur at best, so how should I go about grafting?

If you wrap the pot with blankets when it freezes and cover the foliage with towels it should do fine. A word of advise is to pot up immediately, then make sure the pot is on casters to make moving easier. The growers around here run the sprinklers when it gets too cold, this helps keep them from damage. Avocados require the same care as citrus. My trees are outside for the summer, but will come in in the winter, however i don't run the heater unless you can see your breath, so it gets below freezing inside sometimes. Keep the roots dry when it does get cold otherwise you'll get root rot. It should do fine as long as it's protected.

Did you slowly bring it in a few hours and increase time a little everyday then back outside? Next time just don't bring it in. Some plants can handle that, but best to soften them down. I know with a tree this is impractical, but maybe needed in this case. Many grow these plants here, so you should get some good answers on how to bring inside, You should treat for bugs before you bring it in too, no help from beneficials inside,

Well, standard potting mix is fine (not moisture control-because it holds too much water). The cactus mix is actually good to mix with standard mix because it helps drainage. Avos want damp (not water-logged) soil. Do not pot up soil from your garden.

It looks in my house like an unlimited supply of avocados, I even mailed them up north to my brothers, I knocked my neighbors doors, they go to a workplace every day, it brings me happiness because all the recipients are enjoying the harvest and yes to my knowledge freezing is the only way to preserve them, one year I did that. It is a long harvest, it begun in June and the tree is still packed. Good thing that everyone loves avocados and they are so healthy for you and I never eat them in guacamole, eat them with eggs, with a salad, with shrimp, hot sauce and a lot of citrus. Ungrafted plants very seldom produce quality fruit. The resulting tree is almost always inferior in every way. This is why professional growers graft (it clones the mother tree).
