Help choosing stain for white oak floors.

White oak floors have been installed in my 1920’s Spanish home. Now we are trying to choose a stain and the decision hasn’t been easy. We don’t want the floors to be to dark because they’ll be harder to keep clean and we have a golden retriever.
We prefer to avoid yellow and red undertones and are looking for more of a chocolate distressed grayish color.. if that makes any sense. Here are pictures of the unstained floor and the stain samples. Please let me know what color you like and if you have a good color mix please share!!

Comments (21)First off I don't see anything wrong but it is your house? The quality of the wood will dictate the finished look. You have a very skinny plank with many shades mixed in which usually means a lower end floor. Think about it, the more time the mfg has to pick and match wood tones the more uniform the floor will look and of course cost. I am not even sure that is white oak? It can be a stretch of the word as theater are planks that are not white oak and most do not look like white oak. When you stain wood it will LOOK EXACTLY as it does before the stain but with a different tone. The only way around this is a very dark gel type stain to even out sap wood. You have a lot of sap wood mixed in which again goes back to the quality of the wood. I am in no way saying you have a cheap floor but when you see pics of a perfect grain matched one tone floor it took a lot of money and labor to get to it. Comments (3)OK...start with European Oak and add NordicSeal. The gray can be achieved...not a problem with white oak. But it helps to start with a wood that already exhibits these colour ranges. You will need a Bona Stain...not a sealer. Bona stains are used to seal white oak. It's my understanding that a gray/white stain will offer you want you want. Your flooring pro - who has been trained by Bona to work with their stains...RIGHT? - can offer you samples on the floor for you to view. They will offer those samples on 2ftx2ft patches. You will need to have a single coat of finish ADDED to the coat of colour they put down. You will observe the samples over 24 - 48 hours (have the patches done on Friday...with work to start Monday) so you can view the samples through all 5 lighting situations....See More

5 years agoWe just had our 1960-installed white oak floors refinished. We decided not to use any stain at all, even though there were a few pet stains. Might also have been decision fatigue ;) we are 4 months in to a big Reno job.

5 years agoWe just came back from seeing the house and I think we’ll use the dark walnut stain. It really isn’t dark..
