Newbie with questions about dwarf azaleas
Comments (4)Sorry but there are literally hundreds of azaleas that fit your description. You didn't even narrow down whether they were evergreen or deciduous. If they were properly when they were called dwarf azaleas, they will probably grow to be no more than 3' tall in 10 years but will not stop growing then, just slow down. If not treated properly with acidic soil, etc. they will actually get smaller in size until they die. HD gets good plants with good labels. It sound like they lost the labels on your plants. You may go to another HD and see if they have the plants with the labels. The rose looking azaleas are called double. The variegated azaleas are usually related to Japanese azaleas....See MoreBest Fruit or Nut Tree for Florida 9B?
Comments (31)As a child, our front yard was bordered by Surinam Cherries...The only thing with them is that they DO get wormy if not treated, but make the most amazing jellies! I'm also a huge fan of figs. I do have a Loquat tree that I LOVE! I've learned (on here) that they can be pruned not only to allow sun through (I have pineapples growing around mine) but you can do the "bonsai" thing with them as well. I also love my dwarf bananas. I chose RajaPuri because of the compact size. I started with one sick little plant that someone at ACE hardware was throwing out...he said it was dead. Well, no it wasn't, but it WAS almost dead...waterlogged. Six months later, I now have 9 banana trees! I'm really glad to hear about the nuts that grow here. I used to have pecans in Lake Wales, but they never fruited heavily and the goats got most of the ones we could reach anyway! One should always have a citrus tree. They're fantastic for more than just fruit. I keep a pineapple orange (my favorite) and a Meyer Lemon (dwarf) that does beautifully. I also use the rinds as a disinfectant (I use everything for everything, lol) in my kennel, as well as a deodorizer! One thing about figs: They're pollinated by wasps, so if anyone grows them, cut them in half before biting into them...or you'll never eat another one! Just like Surinams, figs are used by the pollinator to lay their eggs....See MoreSome USDA zones for various Northwest locations
Comments (17)Tom, I think the answer is it depends on the airport, but usually, yes airports are colder. The main reason is that airports are invariably on flat land and frequently on valley bottoms which are frost pockets. Some of them (i.e. Sea-Tac) are on plateaus which aren't as cold as valley floors but still have inferior drainage to sides of hills and any kind of sloping land. Some people live on flat land but a lot of people live on slopes and hillsides especially closer to the water (it would be fun to study what percentage of residences are on slopes of, say, 5% or more). But certain airports should be considered as exceptions because there is so much development around them - including Sea-Tac, Boeing, and Paine Field. All of them are in the middle of concrete jungles and thus probably aren't any colder than the surrounding areas. By contrast you have airports like Olympia and Spokane which are relatively undeveloped themselves, not surrounded by a concrete jungle and definitely much colder in winter (verified by locals, temperature readings and indicator plants) than the cities they represent. I have some support for this idea. If you plot a running average of the lowest temperature every winter for Sea-Tac there is an abrupt rise during the 1950's-60's that is much greater than that of other weather stations in the region. This can only be attributable to the amount of development in and around the airport during that period. I provide the raw data for that here (although the article is actually about something else): http://www.desertnorthwest.com/articles/enso_effects.html That's interesting that Port Townsend records at the fire station - it's about 170' up and 1/3 mile inland, on top of the bluff; meaning that downtown itself, and places like Fort Worden, are probably even milder. Is there a list online somewhere that tells you where each weather station records? I'd love to see it. Here's a quick survey of the coldest temperature during the December 2008 freeze in a few Port Townsend Locations: Jefferson Co. Courthouse 19F Madison St. and Foster 17F Port Townsend Paper (right on the water) 22F Woodland Dr. (near airport) 13F Far Reaches Farm, Hastings Ave. 8F (says them)...See MoreAnother canine renal thread
Comments (14)i would go for another food altogether. a lot of the premium foods are processed at one plants so when there is a recall, they all get recalled even though they are different companies. i have a shihtzu with allergies. i was told salmon is a "hot" protein as is beef, chicken and lamb. my daughter works at a boutique pet store and has had quite a lot of training on foods/proteins etc and usually recommends Fromm, arcana, evo or orgin. we use fromms as it is a small family owned company, has had no recalls, and is less costly than orgin. my dogs like the pork and peas as well as the lamb and lentil. good luck:)...See Morejc_7a_MiddleTN
