Comments (10)Hi Missg, welcome to GardenWeb! I think your plants will grow back just fine, as long as they get the chance. You probably have Colocasia esculenta. Shouldn't be harmful to dogs, but tearing up your plants is obviously something you want to stop. It is frustrating when your dog has gardening ideas that are in conflict with yours. Our great Dane doesn't seem to munch on plants but I do have to do a lot of weird-looking things to make sure he doesn't take a nap where seeds are sprouting, or walk around in beds in general. Have you had a puppy before? What kind do you have? I don't know why one would tear or eat this plant in particular, but in general, they can't be left to their own devices unsupervised. Putting a little fence around the base of your EE's might help while puppy is learning. As you add new plants to your yard, I would use the same type of fence, so your dog gets to know the fence and its' contents means no, off limits. There is a pets forum if you'd like to read about or ask for some training ideas. For the particular thing about chewing/tearing up plants, it sounds like Ken might have more to share about his experiences. IME, just paying close attention and clapping loudly while saying "NO!" as loudly as necessary to be heard when you see unacceptable behavior works well, maybe a little squirt with the hose. Like when you see your pup start to touch the plant or fence. Then notice and praise good behaviors even more. Dogs that aren't taught anything have the most problems, and may not even recognize that you are in charge. Teaching them the same lesson every day for at least a week is usually enough for it to stick. When they know that you definitely are, what you want, they are much more secure and comfortable. A regular routine is good for dogs too....See MoreWhat is this?
Comments (5)This is a great, wonderful plant. It is identified in Juan Chahinian's book as S. t. 'Silver Hahnii Marginated'. It is a great plant. I picked up mine with almost four mature sized pups in the pot. When I seperated them out, I ended up with nearly two plants for every pot. I would wait to seperate yours, until after the pups are over three inches high, patience is the game. This is an odd plant as it gets larger than you would think a hahnii would, but not as large as a regular trifaciata. And the leaves twist more in mine. Did I say, It's a Great Plant? When they are damaged badly, folded or snapped leaves, depending on how large and healthy the plant is, I will trim that busted up leaf to the soil line. BUT, in a plant that has only a handful of leaves, and is chugging along, I would wait and let it just grow peacefully for awhile. It's really just 'cosmetic' looks anyway, pop that guy behind a few others around his size and you won't really notice at ALL. And it will give him time to perk up, and grow, grow, grow. Congrats on finding that Great Plant! Here is something to compare against, to see if you agree. Sansevieria trifaciata 'Silver Hahnii Marginated'...See MoreHere we go again! Curb appeal/Siding :)
Comments (20)I took the test too :) It said I was "autumn tan"...which was funny since it's what I'm trying to remove! Haha. I made two more variations on a theme... From Apr 5, 2011 From Apr 5, 2011 I'm still a little torn but hopefully a decision will be made soon! Gayle, the shutters I've "put" on there are only because they are a style that I can make. There's no way we can afford custom shutters and I don't want to just repaint the louvered ones we have. I want to make them wide enough to look operable. I think skinny shutters look crummy on houses as simple as mine. I figured the board and batten style was something I could make out of cedar myself :) It is a certain style though, I see how not everyone would like it. Shades, I have to say...white typically would be my #1 choice. I love white houses...almost always. Previously I'd always imagined our house going white. Our issues with it are that the white is a little stark against the roof, we'd lose the detail of the pediment etc. and the white shakes don't look quite as realistic as the darker ones...ugh I hate this decision!...See MoreOne of my favorite pieces of junk for my house
Comments (23)I don't read in the bathroom either, Marygail, but have heard the bathroom called "the reading room" for so long, that was my first thought when I saw it. I had hoped to be able to use it and a lot of my other old things, and I hate that it took so long, but circumstances didn't dictate until now. I haven't lived in a real house in many years. I have often said, I hope I live in a house again before I die....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
