One of my favorite pieces of junk for my house

I have had this window for almost 30 years. It will go in the bathroom beside the toilet. I don't know if it came from a door originally...probably did. Maybe a library or Christian Science reading room.

It is one of my all time favorite things, because my husband insisted I buy it. I had been at a two day auction, saw it, liked it, and at the end of the first day, the auctioneer asked if anyone had any requests. I was shy, believe it or not, and I didn't request it.

The next night we were having dinner, and I told my hsuyband about it and how I could kick myself for not requesting it to be brought up and buying it. He asked me if I wanted to go back and get it....was the second night of the auction. I said, no...too far...too late...it was pouring down rain.

He said, "Come on, let's go." It was already 8 pm and the auction started at 7 and we had to drive 100 miles across Houston and farther on out. Got there, no place to park, so he let me out front, and went to park. I went to the back to see if it was still there...it was. He came in...standing room only. I told him to go look at it, and in a few minutes, it came up. He had given the boys who worked the auction a few bucks to bring it up.

Everyone in the house seemed to want it, and it quickly jumped up to more than I wanted to pay. I didn't bid. He said, "Bid, damn it. That's what we came for!" I thought it was too much, and he said, "Buy the damned thing!" I did and I have had it for 30 years and will finally get to use it in my house.

My goodness gracious.....that will be perfect! We call our bathroom the "Library". Can't wait to see where you install it.

It's amazing how this is all coming together for you. Did you wonder if it would ever happen or did you know it would? Your new window is going to be perfect for your bathroom.

We have a large window behind our toilet and I love it, except on those very rare times someone comes along our farm road and I'm dressing. Of course the bathroom faces the road. There is a huge blue spruce that is somewhat in the way thank goodness,,or someone might burn their eyes. lol!!

Margo, I've been following yours and the red shed girls adventure thru your blogs, you guys look like you had a blast! what a great lil junk vacation or heaven, whatever you'd call it! I love your blog, hafta go there almost everyday to see what you have cookin' in that creative head of yours! You got some awesome finds, I love it all. It's a cassone, as fitting to the time period which produced this chest. As Linda stated, it's a bridal chest. Some very fanciful cassones were made, these chests were produced for a few hundred years. It's an excellent piece and certainly looks 17th c. I think the baroque navels on the cherubs are a hoot. And check out those abs! The top is a later replacement to make this less ornamentation and more useful in the limited spaces in which we live nowadays. It has been taken straight off another object rather than made for this one, you can see it's not quite a fit and has stressed in protest. Rear feet have been redone and possibly set in further from the rear corners. I'll bet you can see where the original feet were a little more prominently placed if you turn it over. You have an outstanding object. I admit that I'm jealous! Treasure it. You may be able to locate someone to restore some of the egg beading and forepaws if you're so inclined. Ask a curator at museum, or high-end auction saleroom. Here is a link that might be useful: Cassone

Very nice, but I would have to find another place for it. I'm a reader, but two places I cannot read are the bathroom and in bed.

I love the story! You sound like one of those people, who have things fall into place for you. Or, those rare people who MAKE things work.
Very cool stuff you have accumulated.
You have an incredible amount of patience.

I don't read in the bathroom either, Marygail, but have heard the bathroom called "the reading room" for so long, that was my first thought when I saw it.

I had hoped to be able to use it and a lot of my other old things, and I hate that it took so long, but circumstances didn't dictate until now. I haven't lived in a real house in many years. I have often said, I hope I live in a house again before I die.

Good for your DH to make you bid until you got it no matter what the price.
You would have regretted it if you hadn't.
Happy that its still there and nice interesting piece to have in your house. Did you ever find the back ground information of it?
