Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Pendant Lighting Help! 2 or 3?

Hi all! We are building a new home and I’m trying to decide between three small pendants over the kitchen island or two large ones. If I go with two large, I’m thinking of the pottery barn Flynn oversized pendant (picture below).

Our celings will be 10 ft tall. Pictures show the model home kitchen with three pendants and there is a picture of what our kitchen will look like - excuse my husband in the pic! - it will be painted linen white cabinets with bronze hardware.

what do you think?

HMolly here is an example of the Flynn over exactly what i describe in the first the sink and cabinet hood line up and two large pendants are able to frame that for a nice symmetrical look.

In this second photo of the Flynn they have used three because the sink and cook top are off center of the center of island and each other that is camouflaged by using three centered on the entire island .

With ten feet ceilings if you don’t need to worry about the above predicament i always think going as big as possible looks better and makes a statement so my choice would be two large is the layout handles it. It’s a more current look as well as being less visually busy.

What is your island size? Because the Flynn are essentially clear glass they aren't obtrusive like some lighting would be. I think in an oversized lighting fixture, and the Flynn comes in two sizes the oversized one being 17" in ciurcumfrance and 23" tall that two would be optimal depending on your island size. If you are going for the smaller size 3 (again depending on island size) might be best. All that said there really is no way to say without photos of the space or floor plans etc.

If you use 2 pendants, they will look good at about 16" or smaller. We would normally use pendants in groups of 3 and smaller than the those previous dimensions. A lot of this depends of the style of the room and the look you are trying to achieve. There is no one good answer. Glad to help. ginger@yourlightsite.com

For the uplight, you could go a few routes, especially with respect to dimming functionality. And some fixtures don't support dimming, so you need to figure that out. To that end, I suggest you think through the use cases. For example, the use case that I think I'd appreciate most is late evening, after you've retired to another room of the house, at which time a mellow indirect glow from the skylight cutout would be particularly pleasant. You might also want the more light from this source on occasion, in which case you'd want brighter lights on a dimmer. That being said, here's some options. I'm thinking two, centered on the skylights, mounted near the bottom rim of the cutout (just above the beam probably). Regarding the pendant, I know that selecting pendants is hard enough without more to think about, but one downside of a single pendant vs multiple pendants is thhat single sources create worse shadows. And the clear glass pendants above exacerbate this harsh shadow problem by being point sources, whereas the Fillsta, for example, mitigates this problem because it's effectively a uniform 31" sphere of light. This large diffuser also makes it possible to use a brighter source. For example, you could put a 300W equivalent CFL in the Fillsta, but such a bright light would be unacceptably harsh in a point source like the clear glass pendants above.

Hello everyone!! I NEED HELP!!! I purchased 2 Duke Oversized Pendants (16 inch overall diameter) in 2020 on Pottery Barn site. They make my whole kitchen!! The glass on one of them broke and Pottery Barn site says No Longer available! Ive been in tears for weeks!!! Can anyone tell me where I can find one of these?? My email is ginamt2@yahoo.com. It looks like you will also have another hanging fixture over a table near the island. I might use two instead of three for that reason since they are fairly large. Hang a piece of paper in the size and shape of the lights from a string taped to the ceiling. That allows you to step back and see how you like the spacing. If your sink is centered in the island though, you may want 3 to have enough light. The ceiling lights seem fairly minimal for a kitchen. If the sink is off center, as it appears, 2 lights evenly spaced on the sides of the sink might be better than 3.

Based on that alone I would do two large pendents......but the next question to ask is what sits behind the island and what is open the island? Is there a sink in the island or stove top that would will need to center on? More importantly is there a feature hood or cabinet behind the island that you will need to center on? If the answer to any of these is yes and can be easily centered with the lights then two is still the way to go. BUT if however the answer is yes but some of these features sit askew then 3 is a better way to go because it will look "off" if two aren't centered on one of these features where as with three you can fudge that. Hope that made sense.

our island is 10 ft & we did 3 - 12 inch pendents for it. I like the 1 3 5 7 rule myself...

yr photo does not show so I am not sure on the look /spacing, as pink stated.
