Go pick your marble or counter NOW. Then choose a color from the marble. You should always choose the items that have the least choices first and work towards those that have the most choices. Meaning, countertop first then paint.

Doing it any other way would be bass ackwards because what happens if you choose a stone where the color doesn't work with your paint color?

I cannot get the countertops done today. But I'm looking for a regular gray and white marble.

I wouldn't allow myself to be rushed into selecting paint colors. Fixed elements like counters need to come first.

OK I will try to get the countertops done asap. That said, assuming it's a very basic gray and white marble, I'd really like some input on wall color since it will cover the kitchen and living room. Would *a* shade of gray be the best thing to go with or do you all have other ideas? I don't want to get stuck on the gray idea and miss something that might be better.

If you go to the Farrow and Ball website there is a section about all the different kinds of white. I would find a white paint that worked, rather than a gray one (not suggesting using F&B, just a place to start thinking about whites). White with gray undertones perhaps, but not gray. I love your range.

BTDT. The last thing you need is to be rushed on wall color paint. It needs to be tested in various lights and with the whole thing, all the elements. Don't allow yourself to be rushed. Rush the wall color and then you'll end up hating it and posting back on here about what to do. Which the answer is: repaint. Test six times, paint once.

I will test it in various lighting, that is a good idea. I need help on WHAT colors to test, though - I'm having a hard time even knowing where to start with these colors, other than a light gray.

In addition to the light exposure in the rooms, also consider your furnishings since your space is open. Are you going to have the same or similar furnishings to the ones you have now? What color is your kitchen/living room room now?

I'm drawn to complementary color schemes, and am also a Nancy Lancaster fan who likes the way yellow walls set off antique and vintage brown furniture and Persian rugs. Plus I live in Alberta where the ground, trees, and sky are generally shades of white, grey, and brown from late October to April, so grey or white walls have never been an option for me.

I have a cobalt blue Bluestar range, Ikea Edserum (dark brown) cabinets, Formica "Basalt Slate" countertops on the perimeter, and Carrara marble on the island, and BM Copacabana (yellow) walls throughout the open main floor (kitchen, dining room, living room). I chose the blue specifically to co-ordinate with my blue transferware collection.

Thanks beckysharp.. I'd love to see pics if you have them! A carrara marble is what I'm looking for, and I also have blue transferware. :-) . We will be buying new furniture - in the past I've always gone with earthtones, and our current furniture is brown leather. But I'm getting older and changing my tastes and ready to go for some brighter things! I'm really excited about the stove and bringing some color in. One reason I am thinking the gray walls, in addition to it being all I could think of to go with the kitchen colors, is to keep a neutral tone so I can have more flexibility with furniture colors . But I'm not sure what to even look for in furniture!

Google "brown cabinets blue stove kitchen" for some ideas. You really need something similar as inspiration to take with you to try out colors. At the very least, samples of your cabinet wood and counter marble.

jrb, here's a quick picture of the range and some of the rest of the area (dining and living room). It's not all one large space, the dining room is around one corner from the kitchen and the living room is around the other, and the kitchen and part of the living room aren't visible to each other. I/we've had the same furniture, adding and inheriting pieces, since I graduated from university in the mid-eighties. But all a pretty similar mix, from my first apartments in DC and NYC, and then our first house here on the farm. And I started with yellow walls in my NYC co-op and loved how they looked. I'm slowly hanging pictures, and hoping to get Roman shades for the dining room windows.

Just for reference, the plan is for Tabarka "Maghreb" tiles on the backsplash, if I can find them around here.

Thank you, jrb! It's 48" x 111", c1900 D-end, which means we can split it up into one center table and one round table.

Apologies for the poor pictures, I inherited one of the kid's old phones and a beat-up phone case which does a great job at protecting the phone but obscures the camera. The child most offended is getting a new case for me which should help : ) .

I don't know much about Hallman ranges, jrb. Is it true that they're made by Ilve? Do you already have it, and where did you order it from? Very pretty : ) .

Oh, no, the Ilve comment was mine, no the OP's. It looked like an Ilve to me. I didn't notice the part where the OP said Hallman. I was just mesmerized by the gorgeous blue. Apologies. I will edit my comment above so as not to confuse people.

I think a light blue or the same white as your cabinets. If you go with white you can bring in more color and warmth with art and furnishings.

Rita, no confusion from me -- from what little I've read about Hallman, it's an Italian appliance brand and their ranges are made by Ilve. I was just asking jrb if that's true. I think it looks like an Ilve because it's made by Ilve : ) .

The French and Italian brands are all gorgeous.

I don't know if it's related to Ilve in any way - but it is made in Italy and I can't wait to use it!
