In Singapore, a Living-Dining Area Bathed in Blue
Beachy shades and natural materials lend a relaxed island feeling to this urban apartment

The expatriate owners of a new apartment in Singapore’s busy Orchard Road area called on designer Barbara Fritschy and her Make Room team to design and style the space before they moved in. “The owner of the apartment told us she liked recycled light wooden furniture, and she gave us a color palette of mints and blues she liked. We decided to combine the relaxed beachy, pastel-colored walls with the use of lots of natural materials like wood, linen, bamboo and cotton to create a relaxed home for the family,” Fritschy says.

Fritschy and her team physically demarcated the living and dining spaces by facing the sofa away from the dining table.
“The place was completely empty, so we could style, build and buy from scratch,” Fritschy says. The designer selected furniture and accessories from Originals, Maissone and Make Room.
The woven textures of many of the furnishings — such as the dining and lounge chairs, baskets, and rugs — complete the easy, laid-back look of the space.

For the walls in the living area, Fritschy used a blue called Lakefront from Dulux.
“If you want to create a bold color scheme, it is best to paint the walls, as it is easy to change the wall color after a few years. It is much more costly to change the sofa or dining table. Therefore we advise buying basic furniture and changing it up with accessories like the rug and wall colors,” she says.
Blue lounge chairs and a weathered-look blue coffee table reinforce the color scheme. Potted plants and white accessories provide contrast.

The dining area is painted a lighter blue, Dulux’s Seawind, which complements the pale wooden furniture and mostly white accents for a coastal feel.
Area rugs also help visually separate the two spaces and create a cozier atmosphere in the large room, Fritschy says.
