How Did You Become Interested In Trees?
Comments (28)I used to walk/hike a lot. During my hikes, I began to notice the immense specimens of trees that dotted my paths, and began to marvel at their stature and long life. Then I began to notice what made them different. I discovered trees weren't nearly as invunerable as I previously thought. I ran my car into a tree, avoiding another car, ... and that tree died a year or so later. I saw trees decimated by a windstorm that snapped some in two like their trunks were matchsticks (our lights were out for a week). And I saw many of the the trees that seemingly survived, die in the subsequent years. Of course, I noticed the fall colors as a child, particularly the butter yellow of the Tulip Tree, as well as the reds, oranges and yellows of the maples. I noticed the absolutely huge leaves of the American Sycamore, and how that tree's upper half is barked in white. I noticed the smooth bark of the Beech trees. I noted that conifers aren't really all cylindrical, and began to wonder what was the difference between a pine, and a fir, and a spruce or hemlock. At some point, I was simply fascinated....See MoreWhen did our adult children become perfect?
Comments (69)I am going through this grief right now and it is possibly the most painful heartache imaginable. My adult daughter has alienated herself from me over a difference of opinion on the subject of abortion. I was at one time very much into the prolife movement. But because I've grown and learned, I've changed positions. I support pro choice. My daughter, who has suffered multiple miscarriages, read a comment I made on a discussion about the subject and was offended. She refuses to speak to me. I am beyond heartbroken. I feel as if my daughter wants to control my thoughts. She posts things on social media that lead me to think they are deliberate attempts to twist the knife. So hurtful they are, and she never considers that worse than losing a pregnancy to miscarriage is the pain of having your own child reject you. I have also lost a pregnancy to miscarriage, so I know what that's like. I've also lost my husband, her dad, and that was at the time, the worst pain I'd ever experienced. But this! This child of mine has cost me a lot in terms of sacrifice. At a time when I could least afford it, because I was home from my job for medical reasons, my daughter needed help paying her rent. I committed to help her. She got engaged to a man and mom paid for the wedding. A few years went by and the marriage ended. She needed help again to pay her bills. By then, I was old enough to take early retirement. It was all I had to give. So I did. It cost me half of what I'd otherwise have been entitled to. And that's for the rest of my life. My daughter takes little responsibility for her own affairs. And yes, mom's fault for bailing her out over and over. Her sister got saddled with her cell phone bill. Her dog damages property because he's not properly housetrained, and that has cost her sister a lot of money. My daughter owns 3 cars, two of them are high dollar cars. Her payments for those, she doesn't skip. But it's okay to let everyone else pay for her bills. And she says I lie when I say I love her,...See MoreWhen did Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup become so blah?
Comments (54)oops! sorry. hit a wrong button. I wanted to comment on Campbell's soup. I totally agree about the taste. Dish water is a good discription of the chicken noodle now. and the Tomato, one of my favs, is so bland as well. I remember my mother making soup for us 6 kids and the condensed soup was really what you would call condensed. one regular can of tomato came out of the can in a almost can shaped mass and the directions said to add 3 cans of water! you had to really stir it like mad to get that condensed soup to mix smoothly with the water to create the creamy soup, it was that thicke! and it tasted great! Soup was an economical way to feed a family then. not so much now! Now you only mix in 1 can of water and the "condensed" soup just runs out of the can. really there is no sense adding any water because what you get now is red water, no longer the thick and creamy packed with tomato flavor. bland and watery. same for the chicken noodle. they just keep cheapening the product, like people wont notice. I get the whole "let's get rid of all the artificial crap and high sodium and make this healthier because that's what people want. but if you can't do that and still produce a product that tastes good and people want to buy it, you might as well realize your product is done. people are buying now on nostalgia only and eventually Campell's Soup will be no more....See MoreWhen did the “living room”become “living room space”?
Comments (16)It bothers me when David Visentin says "Dining room area" to describe a room with four walls. He likes to call most rooms "areas" instead of spaces. The term "Open concept" originated in England, I think, and quickly spread to Canada, where Love It or List It originated. I still use the term "open floor plan" instead, which has a longer history. And why do people say "dining room table" instead of "dining table"? In the furniture industry, we never used the term "dining room table". That could refer to any table that happens to be in a dining room. It is similar to people saying "hot water heater" instead of "water heater". You are heating water, you are not heating water that is already hot....See MoreFeathers11
