Growing David Austins in the South?
Comments (8)I'm in Atlanta area and have roughly 25 different Austin's. All have some measure of BS. Queen of Sweden is among the top 5 healthiest / least BS prone. Can't speak to the deer issue. The other standouts for minimal BS for me, at least are: (** next to smaller plants in my garden) Lady of Shallot Abraham Darby Graham Thomas Ambridge Rose* Princess Alexandria of Kent* Heritage* Carding Mill* Golden Celebration Crown Princess Maragreta Generous Gardener Sharifa Asma* I have just as many very prone to BS so I spray them. Morning sun helps. BS won't keep me from enjoying something that brings me so much enjoyment tho! Best, Adrianne :-D...See MoreTHIS is why I order Austin roses from David Austin Roses.
Comments (32)Rebecca- your roses are gorgeous but so much work. I live in Massachusetts. It is so difficult to even dig a hole 10 inches deep with all the rock, boulders and ledge so I try to buy only own root roses. I have gotten some wonderful own root roses from DA and have some more scheduled for delivery next week. I hope they add more own root to their collections. I recently ordered 'Queen of Sweden' and 'Windermere' which is by far my healthiest DA rose and covers herself with delicate soft blush pink blooms from early summer till fall. She is cane hardy in my Z5b-6a garden. The only negative is lack of the "to die for" strong perfume scent that Austins are so known for. sharon...See MoreDavid Austin’s in pots
Comments (91)If you want a fluffy pink, have you considered Princess Alexandra of Kent? She's about 3.5 x 2.5 and, according to David Austin, has a "delicious fresh tea fragrance with aspects of lemon and blackcurrants." Princess Alexandra of Kent I wouldn't know since I do not grow her, but if I had any space left open, I would definitely plant her in my garden. Austin adds that she is highly fragrant and very healthy also and "ideal for pots and containers." Really BIG blooms, I'm told. Kate...See MorePruning David Austin EGLANTYNE Tree Rose
Comments (13)I have three 'Eglantyne' standard roses. I don't have a picture right now, but I can take one tomorrow for you. This rose tends to want to grow long straight canes that are very upright. It doesn't branch very much. Maybe this is something that can be helped with pruning over time (I planted it last year, this will be it's second season). By the end of the summer, it was 3-4 foot tall (the actual rose part, not the trunk). It looked a little bit strange at first, but then it kind of filled out and was really pretty. The canes got long, but they never flopped over until the end of the season when about half of them flopped. When I pruned this year, I tried to prune hard, yet keep the spots where it had branched. Hopefully as time passes, the canes will get thicker and stronger. Maybe I should go out and pinch some of the new growth to encourage some branching? I'm new at this as well, so I'm trying to figure it out too. The brown leaves at the tips? It could be the color of the new growth. In one of those last pics it does seem like there's something else happening. But in the first pics you posted it looks like the color of the new growth to me. Eglantyne is such a charming rose...I love it!...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
