How early is too early for cold plants
Comments (11)Masbustelo, if I plant peas too early here they just rot. Our soil tends to be both cold and waterlogged for weeks in early spring. I guess it's drier where you are stuffradio; WCS's mid-Feb recommendation usually doesn't work for me, and as for "as soon as the ground can be worked" .... baloney! Maybe in Victoria or the lower mainland but apparently local conditions trump all. I have been pre-sprouting successfully for a couple of years (have to plant them gently!) but I don't know for sure that I'm getting any benefit; maybe those years they'd have sprouted in the ground anyway. I suppose I could run some side-by-side week-by-week tests but a) I'm too lazy/disorganised and b) we eat too many fresh peas so there's no big surplus of seed left to play with. Thanks both for your input....See MoreHow early should I direct sow bush beans in Zone 5/6?
Comments (3)With all due respect to your Dad, bush beans are not a cool weather crop. They are a summer crop. In your zone that would probably mean direct seeding in June. Planted too early - before the soil temps are at least 60 degrees - just leads to seed rot, not germination. And that 60 degree soil temp is the minimum required, 65-75 is listed as the ideal on all germination websites. I linked one soil temp germination chart for you below but there are many others available too via Google. Comments (3)If you can move them easily... start taking them out during the day. Starting with cloudy days above 60. Bring them in at night. Avoid windy days at first. I live in Michigan, Yes... Surprised a few there. My Plumi's are beautiful. 3 Trees just over 5 feet. I can't bring them in or out easily anymore. I start looking to put them out in late April. As Long as the days are warm and the temps don't stay more than 3 days in the 40's at night. Here's a link to my little world during the summer, and of course ugly winter. Hope you enjoy the life that summer can bring. Remember, these photos are all taken within 100 feet of each other. Its my little Island in the world. Good luck with the plumi's. Have fun this summer. Comments (17)Rouge, I've been unhappy with the shape of my two paniculata 'Little Limes'. One of them shoots up these long stems in the middle making it out of step with the rest of the branches. Looks awkward. And that is after they were all about the same length and I took off just the dead blooms. So now I don't know whether to just keep taking off the dead blooms every spring or prune them more or shape them after they shoot up the long shoots? Any thoughts?...See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
